Sacramento, California, United States Department of Pesticide Regulation Full time

Job Overview and Responsibilities

Are you interested in contributing to a vital mission that safeguards both human health and the environment? The Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR) is in search of a dedicated professional with a strong technical and analytical foundation in environmental and human health sciences for the role of Environmental Scientist within the Human Health Mitigation Program (HHMP). This program focuses on mitigating health risks by implementing strategies that protect workers and the public from hazardous pesticide exposure. The HHMP employs a multidisciplinary approach, utilizing data from various sources to formulate effective risk mitigation strategies. These strategies include thorough evaluations of pesticide application practices, risk assessments, and the development of necessary mitigation measures.

Under the guidance of a Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisory), the Environmental Scientist will engage in a comprehensive range of activities aimed at assessing pesticide usage and formulating mitigation strategies for pesticides identified as posing unacceptable risks to human health due to exposure through various pathways (inhalation, dermal contact, dietary intake from food and water).

Key Responsibilities Include:

Collecting and analyzing environmental and human health data to evaluate potential impacts on worker health due to pesticide exposure, creating mitigation strategies to minimize these risks, and assessing the effectiveness of implemented measures. Investigating the chemical and physical properties of pesticides, their application methods, and environmental factors that influence their movement to develop effective mitigation strategies. Participating in field studies and scientific research to gather essential data on human health exposure issues related to pesticides, and providing recommendations to enhance worker safety. Drafting clear, comprehensive, and technically sound documentation to support pesticide exposure mitigation efforts.
• Engaging in outreach and training initiatives before and after the implementation of mitigation measures, preparing educational materials, delivering presentations, and addressing inquiries following training sessions. Creating and presenting outreach materials aimed at reducing pesticide exposure among agricultural workers. Reviewing DPR's Pesticide Worker Safety Program to ensure adherence to federal, state, and local worker protection regulations. Assessing Train-the-Trainer (T2) Program submissions, offering constructive feedback, and conducting periodic audits of T2 training courses. Refer to the position duty statement for a complete list of responsibilities.

Additional information about the position can be found in the relevant documentation.

Working Environment

Prolonged periods of computer use, up to 6 hours daily. Office work in a high-rise setting. Capability to lift office and/or field equipment weighing up to 20 pounds. Willingness to travel for fieldwork across the state. Occasional overnight travel may be necessary. Potential outdoor work in varying weather conditions. Possible exposure to pesticides or treated areas, necessitating the use of appropriate personal protective equipment. NOTE: This position may qualify for hybrid telework under specific government regulations for eligible candidates residing in the state, contingent upon meeting established telework criteria. Employees not residing in the state are ineligible for telework. Regardless of telework eligibility, all employees may be required to report to the designated headquarters location at their own expense.

Official transcripts will be required prior to the start date if selected. Applicants must submit a complete employment history on the Examination/Employment Application (STD. 678) form, detailing job titles, dates, hours worked, and a full description of duties.
