About the Physician Assistant-First Assist Role and Robotic Surgery Department

Massachusetts General Hospital, a world-renowned academic surgical center, is seeking an experienced and motivated Physician Assistant to join our team as a First-Assistant in Robotic Surgery.

Key Responsibilities
  • Primary management of adult and pediatric surgical patients in the operating room, in conjunction with surgical faculty and staff.
  • Direct assistance in multispecialty robotic surgery as the first-assistant, with a focus on thoracic, urology, gynecology, colorectal, and general surgery.
  • Operational duties include history and physical, image review, preoperative huddling, patient positioning, prepping and draping, making incisions, robotic port placement, retraction, suction/irrigation, specimen handling, surgical decision-making, stapling and dividing major anatomic structures, suturing deep and superficial tissue layers, dressing placement, drain management, patient transport, and postoperative orders.
  • Administrative and educational responsibilities include training bedside personnel, participating in educational and quality assurance meetings, and pursuing attending-mentored clinical research involving robotic surgery.
Requirements
  • 2 years of surgical experience, with a preference for thoracic, GU, GYN, Colorectal, and General Surgery experience.
  • 1 year of robotic surgical experience preferred.
  • Qualified in all basic and advanced cardiac life support standards as established by the American Heart Association.
  • Eligible for state and federally controlled substances registration.
  • Excellent teamwork and people skills when dealing with patients and/or colleagues.
