Position Summary

The Recovery Support Specialist operates with a high degree of autonomy, delivering essential non-clinical support aimed at assisting individuals in their journey towards recovery from substance use disorders. This role is integral to the Emergency Department team, providing encouragement and peer support to patients seeking help for alcohol and drug-related challenges. The Recovery Support Specialist will also facilitate referrals to treatment services and collaborate on developing individualized service plans to ensure effective connections to necessary resources.

Key Responsibilities

  • Exhibit exceptional interpersonal skills to foster positive relationships with patients and healthcare professionals.
  • Establish and maintain professional connections with community partners and agencies.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in reading, interpreting documents, and composing routine reports.
  • Utilize basic computer skills for documentation and communication purposes.
  • Exhibit patience and tact in interactions with patients, families, and colleagues, while integrating Continuous Quality Improvement principles.
  • Work effectively with diverse populations, showing flexibility and adaptability to changing circumstances.
  • Build collaborative relationships with physicians, families, patients, and interdisciplinary teams.
  • Display a willingness to learn and develop new skills relevant to the role.
  • Uphold the confidentiality and rights of all patient and departmental information.

Qualifications

  • A high school diploma or G.E.D. is required.
  • Candidates must demonstrate a minimum of three years of personal recovery experience from mental health issues or substance use.
  • Eligibility for certification as a Peer Recovery Coach in the State of Maryland, with completion of training and certification within the first year of employment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Familiarity with Peer Recovery Coach methodologies in individual, family, and group settings.
  • Ability to read, interpret documents, and write routine reports; basic computer skills are essential.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving abilities and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in chart documentation, community referrals, and effective networking for patient services.
  • Capability to provide services tailored to the needs of diverse patient populations.

Commitment to Patient Safety

Ensures patient safety through active participation in safety initiatives and by addressing any observed risks.

  • Actively corrects potential safety hazards.
  • Reports any adverse events or near misses to appropriate management.
  • Identifies and communicates potential risks in processes and procedures.
