Position Summary
The Recovery Support Specialist operates with minimal oversight to deliver non-clinical assistance aimed at helping individuals overcome challenges related to substance use disorders. Collaborating closely with the Emergency Department team, the Recovery Support Specialist provides essential peer support and encouragement to patients pursuing treatment for addiction issues. This role involves facilitating referrals to treatment programs and crafting individualized service plans to ensure effective access to necessary resources.

- Foster collaborative relationships with physicians, families, patients, interdisciplinary teams, and community organizations.
- Show a commitment to ongoing learning and skill development.
- Uphold the confidentiality and rights of all patient and departmental information.
Qualifications
- A high school diploma or G.E.D. is mandatory.
- The candidate must actively participate in their own recovery journey, demonstrating a minimum of three years of personal recovery from mental health challenges and/or sustained abstinence from substance use.
- Eligibility for certification as a Peer Recovery Coach in the State of Maryland is required, with completion of training and certification within the first year of employment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Familiarity with Peer Recovery Coach methodologies, both individually and in group settings.
- Ability to read, interpret documents, and write routine reports; basic computer skills are essential.
- Exhibit excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to connect with patients and healthcare professionals, alongside strong problem-solving capabilities.
- Document patient interactions, coordinate community referrals, and employ effective networking strategies to facilitate services beyond the hospital.
- Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide appropriate services to the patient populations served.
Patient Safety Commitment
Ensures patient safety in all job functions and participates in hospital-wide patient safety initiatives.
- Actively addresses observed risks to patient safety.
- Reports adverse events and near misses to the appropriate management authority.
- Identifies potential risks in processes and communicates them to responsible parties.
