Position SummaryThe Recovery Support Specialist operates with minimal oversight, delivering non-clinical assistance aimed at helping individuals overcome challenges related to substance use disorders. Collaborating with the Emergency Department team, the Specialist provides essential peer support and encouragement to patients pursuing treatment for addiction. Responsibilities include facilitating referrals to treatment services and crafting service plans that enhance successful connections to care.

- Foster collaborative relationships with physicians, families, patients, interdisciplinary teams, and community organizations.
- Show a willingness to learn and a desire to develop new competencies.
- Ensure confidentiality and uphold the rights of all patient and departmental records.
Education and Experience
- A high school diploma or G.E.D. is mandatory.
- Candidates must actively participate in their own recovery journey, demonstrating a minimum of three years of personal recovery from mental health challenges and/or sustained abstinence from substance use.
- Eligibility for certification as a Peer Recovery Coach in Maryland is required, with completion of training and certification within the first year of employment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Familiarity with Peer Recovery Coach methodologies in individual, family, and group contexts.
- Ability to read, interpret, and write routine reports; basic computer proficiency is essential.
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills and the capacity to connect with patients and healthcare providers, along with effective problem-solving abilities.
- Proficient in chart documentation, community referrals, and networking techniques to coordinate patient services beyond the hospital.
- Possess the knowledge and skills necessary to provide appropriate services to the patient populations served.
Ensures patient safety in all job functions and actively participates in hospital-wide patient safety initiatives.
- Proactively addresses any identified risks to patient safety.
- Reports adverse events and near misses to the appropriate management personnel.
- Identifies potential risks in processes, procedures, and devices, communicating these concerns to relevant authorities.
