STATEMENT OF DUTIES

Overview of Job Classification:
This role involves delivering language services to assist clients with Limited English Proficiency (LEP) in navigating court services during various proceedings, whether conducted in-person, virtually, or via telephone. The position entails interpreting or coordinating interpreting services through independent contractors and necessitates State or Federal Interpreter Certification or an equivalent qualification.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

To excel in this position, an individual must competently perform the essential functions outlined below. The frequency and percentage of time spent on each task may vary based on specific assignments.

  • Deliver precise, comprehensive, and clear interpretation during all types of hearings where a participant requires a Spanish interpreter due to limited English proficiency.
  • Coordinate the scheduling of interpreters for languages other than Spanish, including American Sign Language interpreters and real-time captioning services for court appearances, competency evaluations, pre-sentence reports, mediations, and court visitations.
  • Authorize payments for independent contractors' services.
  • Assist in the preparation, organization, and distribution of dockets to independent contractors.
  • Process requests for document translation for specific district programs, liaising with the Translation Department of the Office of Language Access and tracking delivery timelines.
  • Translate brief documents, such as letters from defendants to judges, victim statements, and informational flyers for the district.
  • Participate in required meetings and training sessions.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position may involve providing guidance and oversight to other employees, including monitoring work quality, training, instructing, and assigning tasks. The majority of work performed by employees in this role is semi-complex.

HUMAN COLLABORATION

Interactions may lead to decisions regarding policy implementation and may involve supporting contentious positions or negotiating sensitive issues. Contact with the public may be stressful and require high levels of tact and the ability to manage aggressive interpersonal interactions. The impact of these interactions is generally limited.

FREEDOM TO ACT & IMPACT OF ACTIONS

This role operates under general direction, following established standard operating procedures and policies. The employee has the discretion to choose the appropriate procedures or policies to apply to their duties, with performance reviewed periodically. The impact of actions taken is moderate.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

This position requires comprehensive, practical knowledge of work processes. The incumbent should be capable of completing a broad range of tasks, some of which may be complex, with minimal reference to others. The potential impact on the organization is significant.

FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY

This position does not carry any fiscal responsibilities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience Equivalency:
An Associate's degree or two years of college education is required.

OR

Relevant work experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required formal education.

Work Related Experience:
1 to 3 years of experience in interpreting within a judicial context.

Licenses and Certifications:
State or Federal Court Interpreter Certification or an equivalent credential is required.

PHYSICAL EFFORT REQUIREMENTS:
This role is classified as Sedentary Work, requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, with minimal force needed frequently, and/or constant movement of objects, including the human body. Sedentary work primarily involves sitting.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The work environment is generally good, with minimal exposure to unpleasant conditions or hazards.

WORK LOCATION:
The position is typically based in an office or similar indoor setting.

EXPOSURES:
The role may involve interactions with individuals who are hostile or irate, including those with known violent backgrounds.
