As a leading institution in pediatric and adolescent healthcare, Children's Hospital of Michigan provides comprehensive surgical services, including general, thoracic, reconstructive, and cardiovascular procedures. Our state-of-the-art imaging technology is tailored for children, ensuring advanced diagnostic capabilities such as Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and MRI. Our Emergency Department is recognized as a verified Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center and dedicated pediatric burn center, serving thousands of children annually.

Key Responsibilities:

Under the guidance of experienced professionals, you will perform various tasks in the operating room and related areas to support the surgical team at the ambulatory surgery center (ASC). Your main duties will include:

  • Executing first scrub responsibilities, directly assisting the surgeon by providing sterile instruments and supplies at the surgical field.
  • Anticipating the surgeon's needs based on the specific case being addressed.
  • Supporting second scrub duties, which may involve holding retractors, sponging or suctioning the operative site, and applying electrocautery within the surgical technologist's scope of practice, as directed.
  • Collaborating with the circulating RN to ensure accurate accounting of countable items at the sterile field in accordance with established protocols.
  • Assisting the RN in preparing necessary supplies for surgical cases.
  • Identifying specific care requirements related to the patient's age and size.
  • Fostering collaborative relationships with OR personnel by addressing practice issues and communicating effectively.
  • Developing and presenting product and equipment reviews for OR staff.
  • Analyzing current preference card data and collaborating with team members to provide input into the surgeons' preference card content.
  • Working with the nurse manager to assess capital budget needs and maintaining adequate inventory levels of specialty supplies and implants.
Additional Duties:

You will also assist in the preparation, maintenance, and aftercare of supplies, equipment, and facilities within the operating room. This includes:

  • Organizing equipment and supplies in the operating room and arranging instruments as per instructions.
  • Cleaning and sterilizing equipment as necessary, following manufacturer recommendations.
  • Aiding team members in positioning patients on the operating table.
  • Scrubbing arms and hands appropriately and donning gown and gloves.
  • Assisting OR team members in donning gown and gloves and applying dressings post-surgery.
Qualifications:

To be considered for this role, candidates should possess:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent, along with completion of an accredited surgical technician program or equivalent training and experience.
  • Certification by the Association of Surgical Technologists is highly desirable.
  • One to two years of experience as a surgical technician is preferred.
