About the Role

This position is crucial for overseeing the management of surgical instruments and supplies between the Operating Room (OR) and Central Sterile Processing (CSP). The Specialist ensures that all necessary items are readily available to facilitate smooth surgical operations. Additionally, this role involves participating in special projects and initiatives aimed at enhancing processes. A strong emphasis is placed on customer service and satisfaction through effective training, communication, and problem resolution.

Key Duties

  1. Assist OR personnel in preparing the surgical suite by confirming the availability of instrument trays prior to scheduled procedures.
  2. Transport sterile instruments and supplies to the OR while adhering to established standards and techniques, ensuring package integrity.
  3. Monitor case flow throughout the day, anticipating instrument needs and proactively notifying CSP staff of any changes.
  4. Facilitate the return of soiled instruments and equipment to CSP for processing.
  5. Coordinate with CSP staff to plan and execute timely instrument turnarounds.
  6. Verify that instruments required for upcoming procedures are cleaned, wrapped, sterilized, and ready for use.
  7. Demonstrate knowledge of surgical instruments, identifying any that are damaged or malfunctioning, and report these issues accordingly.
  8. Communicate with OR coordinators regarding surgeon preference card adjustments based on instrument usage.
  9. Collaborate with OR staff to identify instrumentation needs for tray modifications and specialty sets.
  10. Respond to inquiries from surgical teams throughout the day as necessary.
  11. Conduct daily audits of completed case carts and submit findings to the CSP data entry team.
  12. Engage in educational activities for healthcare providers regarding the handling and distribution of surgical instruments and supplies.
  13. Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; Associate's degree preferred.
  • Proficient in reading, writing, and understanding the English language.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience as a Sterile Processing Technician; 5 years preferred.
  • Certification as a Sterile Processing Technician through CBSPD or IAHCSMM.

Essential Skills:

  • Strong interpersonal skills for effective communication with hospital staff and vendors.
  • In-depth knowledge of surgical instruments and sterilization processes.
  • Understanding of proper care and handling of surgical instruments.
  • Physical ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 50 lbs and push/pull items up to 450 lbs.
  • Technical proficiency in computer applications, including Excel and Word.
