Children's Hospital of Michigan stands as a premier institution in pediatric and adolescent healthcare. Our surgical services encompass a range of specialties including general, thoracic, reconstructive, and cardiovascular surgery. We utilize advanced imaging technologies tailored for children, providing exceptional diagnostic services such as Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and MRI. Our Emergency Department is recognized as a verified Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center, alongside a dedicated pediatric burn unit. Each year, our experts in pediatric critical care, rehabilitation, and neonatal medicine deliver care to thousands of children across our facilities.

Key Responsibilities:

Under the guidance of experienced professionals and in accordance with established protocols, the Operating Room Specialist will undertake various tasks within the operating room and associated areas to support the surgical team.

Primary Duties:

  • Act as the primary scrub assistant, directly aiding the surgeon by providing sterile instruments and supplies during procedures.
  • Anticipate the needs of the surgical team based on the nature of the operation.
  • Support the second scrub role by performing tasks such as holding retractors, suctioning, and applying electrocautery as directed.
  • Collaborate with the circulating nurse to ensure accurate counts of instruments and supplies at the sterile field.
  • Assist in preparing and organizing necessary supplies for surgical cases.
  • Recognize and address specific care requirements related to the age and size of patients.
  • Foster collaborative relationships with operating room personnel through effective communication.
  • Conduct reviews of products and equipment for the operating room staff.
  • Analyze preference card data and provide input for updates to the surgical team's preferences.
  • Work with the nurse manager to assess capital budget needs and maintain adequate inventory of specialty supplies.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the preparation, maintenance, and post-operative care of supplies and equipment in the operating room.
  • Organize instruments and supplies in the operating room according to established guidelines.
  • Support team members in positioning patients on the operating table.
  • Ensure proper hygiene by scrubbing hands and arms, and donning appropriate surgical attire.
  • Assist team members in donning surgical gowns and gloves, and apply dressings after surgery.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent, along with completion of a surgical technician training program or a combination of relevant training and experience.
  • Certification from the Association of Surgical Technologists is highly desirable.
  • Preferred experience of one to two years in a surgical technician role.
