Responsibilities:

The Facility Safety Head (FSH) plays a crucial role in ensuring the safe operation of the TDT wind tunnel and its associated equipment and systems. The FSH will undergo a comprehensive training and certification program that consists of four phases, which include studying LaRC rules, guidelines, and procedures, familiarizing with TDT facility systems, and demonstrating practical knowledge through board reviews.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Reviewing and approving modifications to facility and tunnel systems.
  • Ensuring that facility drawings, test procedures, and maintenance instructions are maintained under configuration control.
  • Participating in the test life cycle, from inception to model removal.
  • Conducting test readiness reviews and ensuring adherence to safety guidelines.
  • Evaluating and coordinating safety analyses to support facility operations.
  • Maintaining personnel training records and ensuring compliance with training programs.
  • Conducting monthly safety inspections and meetings to uphold safety standards.
  • Identifying and resolving safety issues, ensuring proper mitigations are in place.

The role requires integration of safety into all operations, which may involve various systems, including:

  • Tunnel and Plenum systems.
  • Main Drive systems.
  • Facility Service Air and Cooling Water systems.
  • Heavy Gas Reclamation systems.
  • Other Testing Systems.

Qualifications:

U.S. Citizenship is required. Candidates must possess a BS degree from an accredited engineering program and have five to eight years of relevant experience, or a MS degree with four to six years of experience, or a Ph.D. with two to four years of experience. A strong background in facility system safety and mechanical and electrical system analysis is essential. Familiarity with aeronautics, NASA operations, and personnel training is preferred.

Work Environment:

The position involves working in a test environment with potential exposure to high noise levels and hazardous materials, as well as in an office setting. Travel between facilities may be required.

Physical Requirements:

Candidates must be able to perform physical tasks such as walking, standing, and lifting up to 35 lbs. Visual and physical contact with test-related systems is necessary.

Attendance:

Regular attendance is mandatory, with occasional overtime required.

Other Essential Functions:

U.S. citizenship is required, along with a valid driver's license. Candidates must demonstrate professional behavior that enhances productivity and teamwork.
