Job Responsibilities

The Urban Division of VDOT, part of the Hampton Roads Construction Program, is in search of a skilled professional to oversee and evaluate roadway, structural, and bridge construction projects of varying complexity. VDOT Inspectors are tasked with fostering transparent communication, collaboration, and superior construction management to ensure projects are completed on schedule, within budget, and to high standards of quality and safety. The role involves ensuring contractor adherence through the review, interpretation, and enforcement of plans and contractual documents, as well as the efficient monitoring and inspection of field operations and the preparation of comprehensive and precise project documentation.

Physical Requirements

This position entails physically demanding tasks in field environments. Regular activities include climbing, crawling, stooping, lifting weights up to 50 pounds, working at heights, navigating confined spaces, and traversing embankments.

Essential Qualifications

  • Proven experience with construction techniques, materials, equipment, standards, specifications, and terminology.
  • Familiarity with state and federal safety, environmental, and EEO/DB regulations pertinent to transportation construction.
  • Strong mathematical skills, including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
  • Capability to apply mathematical formulas and engineering principles for field adjustments to construction plans.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting roadway, structural, and bridge plans, as well as construction contracts and project management documents.
  • Ability to generate reports, input data, and maintain accurate files.
  • Capacity to work independently and supervise the work of others.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in using engineering and testing equipment along with relevant software applications.
  • Ability to obtain certifications in various areas including concrete/asphalt-field, soil compaction, nuclear safety, aggregates, guardrail installation, pavement markings, First Aid, CPR, flagging, work zone safety, stormwater inspection, erosion and sediment control, and OSHA safety training.
  • A valid driver's license and safety footwear are mandatory.

Additional Considerations

  • Experience in a wide range of road and bridge construction inspection activities with a Department of Transportation or a consulting inspection firm.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and software such as Site Manager or PlanGrid.
  • Experience in supervising the work of others.
  • Possession of current certifications and completion of training in fall protection and confined space protocols.
