Role Summary:

The primary objective of the Underwriter is to evaluate routine risks, ascertain their acceptability, and successfully underwrite profitable business accounts. Within the defined authority, the underwriter will assess insurance applications to classify, rate, and determine the acceptability of risks, coverage options, and pricing. The individual will be accountable for the financial outcomes of their assigned portfolio and is expected to foster profitable retention and growth.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Assess the acceptability, quality, pricing, and profitability of new and existing business opportunities.
2. Conduct comprehensive risk analyses on assigned accounts, utilizing relevant industry standards and guidelines.
3. Underwrite and evaluate risks for routine small business renewals and new business proposals.
4. Employ predictive modeling for efficient processing of a high volume of accounts.
5. Utilize company systems to manage requests and endorsements effectively.
6. Communicate with agents through internal systems to facilitate transactions.
7. Identify and pursue new business opportunities within the assigned portfolio.
8. Collect and analyze data necessary for accurate risk evaluation.
9. Establish appropriate pricing based on risk assessments and coverage provided.
10. Leverage available resources, including underwriting guidelines and business strategies, to ensure a thorough understanding of risk exposures.
11. Prepare proposals for producers, including the negotiation of terms and conditions.
12. Ensure the accurate issuance of policies, certificates, and notifications.
13. Seek management guidance on risks that exceed assigned authority levels.
14. Utilize industry regulations to ensure proper policy construction.
15. Identify underwriting challenges and recommend actionable solutions.
16. Manage existing and prospective accounts through active participation in renewals and presentations.
17. Monitor and analyze agent performance, initiating actions as necessary.
18. Serve as a resource for team members and other units.
19. Apply discretionary pricing based on account exposures and predictive model insights.
20. Communicate all underwriting decisions or changes regarding coverage and pricing, discussing alternatives with agents as needed.

Additional Responsibilities:

1. Travel to various locations to support business objectives as required.
2. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution preferred; significant professional experience may substitute for educational requirements.
  • Two years of experience in the property and casualty insurance sector preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal skills demonstrating professionalism, adaptability, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Preferred insurance designations or coursework (e.g., AINS - Associate in General Insurance).
  • Critical thinking skills to assess situations and select the most appropriate decisions.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of underwriting laws and their application.
  • Understanding of risk management, underwriting, and loss control policies.
  • Familiarity with the insurance industry and its operational environment.
  • Comprehensive understanding of business exposure calculations and classifications.
  • Ability to develop strategies for account retention and acquisition.
  • Team-oriented with the ability to manage multiple assignments effectively.
  • Proficient in Excel.
