Position Overview
This role is integral to the operations of the YMCA, a prominent nonprofit organization focused on community enrichment through youth development, health initiatives, and social responsibility. The Financial Accountant is responsible for fostering a supportive and positive environment while executing essential accounting tasks such as journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial reporting.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree in accounting with five years of relevant experience or a bachelor’s degree in accounting with one to two years of experience.
  • Familiarity with general ledger and accounting practices, including GAAP and internal controls.
  • Proficient in computerized accounting systems.
  • Experience in nonprofit accounting is advantageous.
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities.
  • Highly organized with the capacity to manage confidential information.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct monthly bank reconciliations, prepare and review journal entries, and maintain recurring journal entries.
  • Record daily transactions from operational systems into the general ledger.
  • Manage and reconcile payroll transactions.
  • Provide support for Accounts Payable and serve as a backup for daily operations.
  • Act as a liaison for daily banking activities.
  • Assist the VP of Finance with month-end and year-end closing processes, including the preparation of audit documentation.
  • Engage in various accounting, financial analysis, and budgeting projects.
  • Collaborate with departmental staff to comprehend accounting processes and procedures.
  • Address challenges with timely and effective solutions.
  • Deliver all internal and external interactions with exceptional customer service.
  • Adhere to facility protocols to ensure the safety of all staff and children, including:
    • Complying with policies regarding boundaries with staff and children.
    • Participating in required training for abuse risk management.
    • Reporting any suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations.
    • Following mandated reporting requirements for abuse.

  • While performing the duties of this role, the employee is frequently required to use a computer for extended periods and communicate via computer and phone/smart device. The employee must be able to sit, reach, and move around the work environment.
  • Occasional lifting and/or moving of up to 10 pounds may be necessary.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • The noise level in the work environment is typically moderate.
