Position Overview:

The Lillehei Heart Institute at the University of Minnesota-Minneapolis is a leading research center equipped with advanced technologies and essential facilities dedicated to the molecular mechanisms of myogenesis, stem cell research, and regenerative biology.

The successful candidate will be responsible for creating innovative bioinformatics and computational strategies to explore dynamic gene regulation and lineage hierarchies in cardiac, endothelial, and hematopoietic development. This role is focused entirely on research activities.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Establish and enhance the bioinformatics program within the Daniel Garry laboratory.
  • Supervise, mentor, and train students and research associates, ensuring effective delegation of tasks.
  • Ensure adherence to research policies and procedures.
  • Contribute to the preparation of grant proposals.
  • Develop or integrate cutting-edge statistical methodologies and algorithms for the analysis of large-scale omics data, including gene regulatory network inference and cell lineage reconstruction.
  • Conduct routine bioinformatics analyses, such as RNA-seq and microRNA target predictions.
  • Collaborate with laboratory members on bioinformatics analyses as required.
  • Stay actively engaged in current bioinformatics research trends and leverage new technologies for future advancements.
  • Prepare, write, and present research findings for publication.
  • Draft and submit grant applications.

Required Qualifications:
  • Proficient programming skills in Python (or Perl) and R.
  • Familiarity with data science and visualization libraries in R.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Experience in effectively communicating complex results to a diverse audience, including molecular biologists and laboratory scientists.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
  • Ph.D. or equivalent experience in Computational Biology, Biostatistics, Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Data Science, or a related field.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in bioinformatics research.
  • Strong quantitative background with a solid understanding of probability, statistics, and optimization.
  • Proven expertise in algorithm implementation and testing.
  • Experience with publicly available bioinformatics/genomics tools and resources such as NCBI, EnsEMBL, and UCSC.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Familiarity with common NGS analysis tools (BWA/samtools/TopHat/Cufflinks/HTSeq/edgeR/DESeq2).
  • Proven ability to design and implement machine learning techniques and algorithms.
  • Experience in a Linux computing environment.
  • Strong planning, organizational, and execution skills.
  • Positive attitude and excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Familiarity with parallel computing environments (MPI).
  • Ability to prepare manuscripts for publication.
