Role Overview
The Patient Care Technician provides essential, patient-centered care in a clinical environment under the daily guidance and supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN). This role adheres to the established standards of practice and complies with state regulations.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist the RN in delivering daily patient care, including personal hygiene, feeding, mobility support, and ambulation, ensuring the use of appropriate assistive devices and techniques.
- Accurately measure and document vital signs, including blood pressure, temperature, pulse, and respiration, as well as intake and output, and maintain comprehensive records in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
- Conduct purposeful rounding as directed by the RN, effectively communicating any observations or concerns regarding patient needs.
- Support the admission, transfer, and discharge processes, ensuring a smooth transition for patients and managing their belongings with care.
- Collect specimens for laboratory testing and perform point-of-care tests while adhering to proper labeling and identification protocols.
- Execute various errands as instructed, including the delivery of trays, charts, and reports, while maintaining cleanliness and organization in the nursing area.
- Facilitate patient positioning and transportation, employing safe lifting techniques and assistive devices as necessary.
- Contribute to maintaining skin integrity through proper repositioning and skin care practices, ensuring the availability of special patient supplies.
- Under RN supervision, may perform specific tasks such as IV removal, post-mortem care, phlebotomy, ECGs, and bladder scans, in accordance with state regulations.
- Adhere to infection prevention policies by practicing hand hygiene and following sterile procedures.
Work Schedule
This position requires a commitment of 0.9 FTE, with 12-hour shifts, including every other weekend and holiday rotation.
Licenses & Certifications
Must hold a Nurse Aide certification in good standing with the State Registry and obtain Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) within 45 days of hire.
Educational Requirements
A high school diploma or equivalent (GED/HSED) is required.
Experience
No prior experience is necessary for this role.
Skills & Competencies
Basic computer proficiency, strong verbal and written communication skills, and excellent organizational abilities are essential. Team members are expected to maintain annual educational requirements for hospital-based certifications.
