Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Water Treatment Plant Operator to join our team at American Water. As a key member of our operations team, you will be responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient treatment of water for our customers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Coordinate the activities of associates engaged in the operation and maintenance of water treatment plants and facilities.
  • Develop and maintain Standard Operating Procedures to ensure compliance with company health and safety standards.
  • Operate and maintain plant and lab equipment, including mixers, vacuum pumps, and sludge removal systems.
  • Monitor SCADA systems to remotely adjust and control pumps, motors, and chemical feed equipment.
  • Collect and test water samples to determine acidity, color, turbidity, pH, bacteria content, and other impurities.
  • Record data and maintain online analytical instruments to monitor water quality.
  • Respond to consumer complaints, emergencies, and answer telephone calls or notifications to supervisors.
  • Order, load, unload, and receive chemicals and materials used to purify and operate water treatment systems.
  • Clean, paint, and maintain the workplace.
Requirements
  • A valid Maryland driver's license with the ability to pass a motor vehicle check.
  • A Maryland Class 4 Water Operator License, with the ability to maintain or obtain within 4 years of being awarded the position.
  • High school graduate or equivalent, with operator experience preferred.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and make decisions to ensure the safe and efficient treatment of water.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to work effectively with colleagues and supervisors.
Working Conditions

This position requires the ability to work in a variety of environments, including:

  • Inside and outside, with exposure to wet and humid conditions.
  • Exposure to odors, toxic conditions, chemical dust, or poor ventilation.
  • Ability to wear a respirator and work in confined spaces.
Math Skills

This position requires mathematical development sufficient to:

  • Calculate surface, volume, weights, and measures.
  • Calculate square roots, variable formulas, and plane and solid figures.
  • Understand kind of angles and properties of pairs and angles.
Language Skills

This position requires developed language skills to:

  • Read and understand instructions, safety rules, state/federal regulations, and other written materials.
  • Write reports with proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar.
  • Speak with poise, voice control, and confidence using correct English and well-modulated voice.
