Position Overview

The Bureau of Reclamation is in search of a dedicated professional to leverage their skills as a Civil Engineer with a specialization in Geotechnical Engineering. This role is pivotal in addressing the growing water needs while ensuring environmental sustainability.

Location: Lakewood, Colorado

Agency Clarification

This position is being filled under the Direct-Hire Authority of the Office of Personnel Management and is open to all U.S. Citizens and Nationals. Traditional veteran preference and application rating processes do not apply, although qualified veterans will receive full consideration.

Key Responsibilities

- Conducts comprehensive geotechnical evaluations for the design of earth and rockfill dams. Develops recommendations to support various civil engineering projects, including building foundations and hydraulic conveyance systems. Utilizes specialized software as necessary for assigned geotechnical tasks. Oversees the planning and execution of geotechnical engineering design projects.

- Possesses a deep understanding of geotechnical analysis techniques to resolve a wide range of design and construction challenges related to embankment dams and associated structures. Compiles and documents essential technical data for risk assessments concerning potential failure modes of embankment dams.

- Acts as the project team leader, responsible for creating schedules and managing budgets. Directs the efforts of engineers and technicians on assigned projects, ensuring effective coordination of tasks.

- Prepares detailed reports on design work for project planning and construction. Develops technical memoranda to support decisions regarding the analysis and construction of embankment and non-embankment structures. Communicates findings from risk assessments and technical analyses effectively.

Qualifications

Conditions of Employment

Must be a U.S. Citizen or U.S. National.

Must pass a background investigation to be deemed suitable for federal employment.

Must meet specified education and experience criteria.

Submission of transcripts to verify educational qualifications is mandatory.

A current, valid Professional Engineering (P.E.) license is required.

Education and Experience Requirements

To qualify for the Civil Engineer position, candidates must meet both the Basic Qualification Requirement and Additional Requirements. The resume must clearly outline relevant experience.

Basic Qualification Requirement

A. Degree: Engineering. The program must lead to a bachelor's degree in an ABET-accredited engineering school or include advanced coursework in key engineering science areas.

B. Combination of education and experience: College-level education, training, and/or technical experience that provides a thorough understanding of engineering principles.

Additional Requirement

Specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level, specifically in geotechnical engineering analysis and design related to embankment structures.

Professional Registration

A valid Professional Engineer License is mandatory. Failure to provide proof will result in ineligibility for the position.
