SUMMARY: The Special Education Support Specialist will collaborate closely with individual students or small groups of students with special needs, providing essential physical assistance and emotional encouragement to help them fully benefit from their educational experience under the guidance of the supervising educators.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Other responsibilities may be assigned. 1. Assist assigned students with any physical tasks as directed by the supervisor, assigned teacher, or principal. 2. Provide reinforcement to students in subjects such as reading, mathematics, science, and social studies, as well as daily living activities as instructed by the supervisor. 3. Support the teacher in developing methods, materials, and strategies for reinforcing learning in targeted students. The teacher will be responsible for lesson planning and instruction. Collect data as required by teachers or ancillary service providers. 4. Aid the teacher in facilitating communication between home and school when requested. 5. Engage in ongoing professional development. 6. Assist in planning schedules to meet the needs of students. Help gather and/or prepare materials to enhance student learning. 7. Maintain regular communication with teachers regarding students' needs and progress. 8. Treat all information about the school, staff, students, and their families with strict confidentiality. 9. Supervise classes and lunches as needed.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE An Associate's Degree, 60 college credit hours, or proof of passing the Paraprofessional Test is required. Experience working with children is preferred.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: A High School diploma is required.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as textbooks, teacher manuals, safety regulations, operating instructions, and procedural manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to effectively communicate before groups of students or faculty.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and the school community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in both oral and written forms. Ability to perform duties with an understanding of school requirements and Board of Education policies.

Ability to operate computers and related software or willingness to learn necessary computer skills.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this role.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, walk, or stand.

The employee may be required to provide physical assistance, including help with toileting, transferring students from wheelchairs, or during physical education activities.
