Position Overview
The Agricultural Research Service (ARS) serves as the primary scientific research entity of the United States Department of Agriculture, recognized globally for its contributions to scientific advancement.

Role Summary
ARS Postdoctoral Research Scientists are engaged to enhance the research efforts of a principal investigator addressing critical agricultural challenges that significantly impact American farming.

Key Responsibilities
1. Develop a bioinformatics-driven strategic framework utilizing shotgun metagenomic sequencing data to construct comprehensive pan-genome assemblies.
2. Investigate the microbiomes of Drosophila suzukii as a focal case study.
3. Employ traditional microbial culturing techniques to generate independently sequenced and complete genomes of up to 20 predominant microbes found within the flies.
4. Categorize sequence reads against both host and microbial reference genomes.
5. Explore various methodologies and parameters to construct pangenomes, while evaluating and comparing their quality.

Qualifications
This position necessitates a recent Ph.D. in biology, microbiology, or a closely related discipline that has equipped the candidate with the essential knowledge, skills, and competencies to fulfill the responsibilities of the role.

Desirable Skills
Proficiency in contemporary bioinformatics techniques related to shotgun metagenomic data, alongside a solid foundation in molecular biology, genetics, and microbiology, is highly advantageous.

Educational Requirements
Applicants must satisfy the fundamental qualifications as outlined by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) for at least one of the scientific disciplines pertinent to the responsibilities of the position.

General Qualifications
1. Degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related fields relevant to the position.
2. Alternatively, a combination of education and experience in these areas is acceptable.

Microbiology Qualifications
1. Degree in microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science with at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and related subjects, along with 20 semester hours in physical and mathematical sciences, including organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or equivalent qualifications.
2. Alternatively, a combination of education and experience in these areas is acceptable.
