Job Responsibilities:

As a CNC Gear Hobbing Machinist, you will be responsible for setting up, adjusting, and operating CNC gear hobbing machines, shapers, and shavers to manufacture precision splines and gear teeth on metal blanks according to defined specifications and machining instructions. Your expertise in gear hobbing procedures will be essential in ensuring the accuracy and quality of the machined components.

Key Duties:
  • Interpret machining instructions, blueprints, work orders, and specification sheets to determine machine settings, fixtures, and required hobs for specific gear dimensions and tolerances.
  • Efficiently power up and down the machinery, load and unload parts, and ensure the correct tooling is utilized.
  • Select, align, and secure fixtures, holders, tooling, hobs, and attachments as well as manage materials.
  • Set up and operate the machines to confirm the precision of CNC settings or programs, adjusting controls to manage machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and cutting depth and angle. You may also need to calculate gear dimensions or machine settings.
  • Ensure that hobbed gears conform to specifications by using micrometers, gauges, and computerized gear checking tools.
  • Adhere to all work instructions while maintaining compliance with ISO/QS Standards and Northern Gear & Machining procedures, as well as quality certification requirements.
  • Perform all necessary preventative maintenance tasks, identify machine malfunctions, test machine operations for functionality and performance, and make adjustments as required.
  • Collaborate with engineers, programmers, production staff, and management to address machining challenges, focusing on continuous improvement, tool life enhancement, cost reduction, machine downtime minimization, improved setup times, and quality enhancements.
  • Assist and train operators within the gear/hob/shaper department.
  • Undertake other job-related responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications:
  • Physical capability and stamina to fulfill the essential functions of the role, including the ability to walk, stand, lift, and carry up to 40 pounds, as well as perform tasks requiring bending, stooping, reaching, and twisting for extended periods.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to complete forms, input data into computer systems, and share information with team members.
  • Ability to read and comprehend blueprints effectively.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced production environment.
