The City of Durham's Water Management Department is home to over 370 skilled and dedicated professionals committed to ensuring the delivery of safe drinking water and effective wastewater management throughout the community.

Our team is engaged in long-term planning and infrastructure development for water and wastewater systems, ensuring environmental compliance through regular treatment and testing, and promoting water conservation among the public to guarantee clean, safe water for all.

Key Responsibilities:
As a Senior Financial Analyst, you will serve as a subject matter expert in accounting and finance, focusing on utility finance, including inventory management and budgeting. Your role will involve:

  • Coordinating the Finance and Budget services within the Water Management Department.
  • Providing professional fiscal analysis and support to 11 division heads.
  • Performing complex financial analyses and fiscal program administration.
  • Monitoring and coordinating fiscal program activities, including preparing analytical spreadsheets and resolving issues related to financial systems.
  • Managing comprehensive finance and budget activities for water and sewer services.
  • Overseeing billing operations, ensuring billing integrity, and conducting research on discrepancies.
  • Delivering exceptional customer service by addressing finance-related inquiries and resolving complex issues.
  • Developing and implementing administrative policies to enhance departmental efficiency.
  • Ensuring compliance with financial regulations and policies.
  • Collaborating with various financial units, vendors, and external agencies.

Qualifications:
To be considered for this position, candidates should possess:

  • A Bachelor's degree or equivalent in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related field.
  • A minimum of five years of professional experience in accounting or finance.
  • Advanced knowledge and experience with Munis or similar finance and accounting software.
  • Experience with inventory management and account reconciliations.
  • Proficiency in advanced Excel skills and familiarity with reporting tools such as Access, Power BI, and Crystal Reports.
  • Governmental accounting experience is strongly preferred.
