Job Title: Special Education Support Assistant

Position Overview: Under the guidance of an educational administrator and in collaboration with certified staff, this role involves providing essential support to educators in the academic development of students. Responsibilities include instructional assistance, organization, record maintenance, behavior management, classroom safety, and effective communication with students, support personnel, and parents. The students may present with various cognitive, communicative, and emotional challenges, necessitating tailored academic and adaptive skills instruction.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Oversee students in classroom settings as directed by the educator.
  • Assist in maintaining classroom routines and procedures.
  • Implement interventions to redirect student behavior, assess crisis situations, and document incidents while fostering positive self-esteem.
  • Support the teacher by supervising school activities both on and off campus during instructional hours.
  • Help in executing individual behavior plans for students.
  • Facilitate student movement within the building to promote integration.
  • Assist in preparing the classroom for group instruction, projects, and activities.
  • Integrate technology into the learning environment.
  • Engage in effective teamwork, collaboration, conflict resolution, and communication.
  • Provide individual and/or group instruction, including support for regular education students after initial teacher-led instruction.
  • Work within a regular classroom setting that includes special education students.
  • Offer constructive feedback to students and educators.
  • Utilize questioning and discussion techniques to support student learning.
  • Encourage student engagement with the curriculum.
  • Support students in self-advocacy efforts.
  • Assist students in utilizing technology effectively.
  • Exhibit clear and expressive oral and written communication.
  • Support child development and language acquisition.
  • Assist students in integrating into regular education classrooms.
  • Collaborate with the teacher in designing and implementing instructional strategies.
  • Contribute to the development and execution of Individual Education Plans (IEPs).
  • Demonstrate knowledge of district resources.
  • Assist in planning and implementing community-based instruction.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding student and staff information.
  • Model appropriate behavior for students.
  • Establish and maintain a professional rapport with the classroom teacher and staff.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to the needs of students, staff, and parents.
  • Communicate with students, parents, and staff through various means as directed.
  • Observe and document student behavior, assisting in discipline as instructed.
  • Exhibit strong organizational and prioritization skills.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and responsiveness to changing situations.
  • Participate in staff meetings, professional learning communities, and parent conferences as required.
  • Complete a minimum of 20 hours of professional development annually, with reduced requirements after three years.
  • Assist students with transportation needs and ensure their safety during transit.
  • Support the care of students' medical needs under professional supervision.
  • Assist students with personal care tasks, including hygiene and feeding.
Additional Responsibilities: Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Equipment Utilization: This position may require proficiency in using SMART boards, iPads, and standard office equipment such as computers and copiers. Compliance with district guidelines for equipment use is mandatory.

Travel Requirements: Occasional travel between schools may be necessary.

Physical and Mental Demands:
  • Ability to work in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to respond promptly to emergencies, which may include physical restraint techniques.
  • Ability to walk long distances, stand for extended periods, and perform physical activities.
  • Possess the physical stamina and dexterity required for a full day of active engagement.
  • Ability to see and hear effectively.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 20 pounds.
Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • For positions in Title Schools, a minimum of 48 accredited college credits or a state-approved assessment is required.
  • Some roles may require knowledge of sign language, Braille, or other specialized skills.
  • Training in first aid and awareness of child abuse symptoms may be necessary.
Professional Standards:
  • Employees are expected to fulfill all assigned duties and adhere to scheduled hours.
  • Any changes to assigned hours must be approved in advance.
  • Employees must maintain a professional appearance that reflects positively on the organization.
Interpersonal Relations:
  • Engage with district personnel, customers, and vendors in a professional manner.
  • Work under the direct supervision of the department supervisor to complete daily tasks.
  • Interact with a diverse population, demonstrating tact and diplomacy.
  • Respond to customer needs with a positive attitude and effective communication.
