We are in search of a Senior RF Communications Engineer to engage in the modeling, assessment, and design of advanced RF communication systems utilized in airborne applications. The systems you will work on are crucial for ensuring the technological superiority of the U.S. Department of Defense against potential threats. You will become part of a dedicated team of engineers who are committed to creating groundbreaking RF systems for intricate future combat scenarios. As a Senior RF Communications Engineer, your key responsibilities will include:
  • Modeling, analyzing, and testing RF communication data links and systems in demanding operational contexts (e.g., electronic warfare, high Doppler environments, extreme conditions).
  • Collaborating with a diverse group of highly skilled engineers and scientists to drive innovation and enhance system performance, serving as a thought leader in our advisory role to government entities.
  • Applying your expertise in RF systems to the modeling, simulation, design, and analysis of RF technologies across various domains based on your interests and the needs of APL programs.
  • Utilizing existing or developing new analytical tools and software to predict and assess the performance of communication links.
  • Researching and experimenting with new communication protocols to discover innovative solutions for challenging RF system issues.
  • Assisting leadership in defining and executing a growth and training strategy for the RF Systems and Seeker section to effectively meet the engineering demands of our projects, relying on your vision and leadership for future success.
To excel in this role, you should have experience in several of the following areas:
  • RF system design and architecture
  • RF communications and data link technologies
  • Link budget analysis and design
  • Military communication systems, including satellite, terrestrial, and maritime networks
  • Waveform modeling and simulation
  • Digital signal processing
  • Protocol development
  • Spread spectrum communication techniques
  • Bench-level hardware testing and performance evaluation
  • Software-defined radio technologies
  • Data encryption methodologies
  • Antennas and electromagnetic principles
Preferred tools and skills include:
  • MatLab/Simulink and other high-level programming languages (e.g., Python, C++)
  • Ansys Systems Tool Kit (STK)
  • GNU Radio and various SDR hardware platforms
  • Familiarity with standard RF testing equipment and procedures
  • Board-level RF design experience
  • System implementation in FPGAs and RFSoCs
  • AFSIM proficiency
Minimum qualifications for this position include:
  • A Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, physics, or a related discipline.
  • A minimum of 15 years of combined experience in RF systems engineering (12 years with a Master’s degree, 9 years with a PhD).
  • A strong background in the development and testing of RF communication systems.
  • An active Secret security clearance with the ability to obtain a TS/SCI level clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
