We are in search of a Senior RF Communications Engineer to assist in the modeling, assessment, and design of advanced RF communication systems utilized in airborne platforms. The systems that we evaluate and develop are crucial for maintaining the technological superiority of the U.S. Department of Defense against potential threats. You will become part of a dedicated and knowledgeable team of engineers committed to creating innovative RF systems for deployment in intricate future combat scenarios. As a Senior RF Communications Engineer, your responsibilities will include:
  • Modeling, analyzing, and testing RF communication data links and systems for advanced applications in challenging operational environments (e.g., electronic warfare, high Doppler, extreme conditions).
  • Collaborating with a diverse group of skilled engineers and scientists, serving as a thought leader to innovate and enhance system performance, while providing insights that elevate our team's capabilities and expertise as trusted advisors to the government.
  • Applying your RF subject matter expertise to the modeling, simulation, design, and analysis of RF systems across various domains, aligned with your interests and APL's program requirements.
  • Utilizing existing or developing new analytical tools and software to predict and analyze the performance of data communication links.
  • Researching, investigating, and experimenting with new communication protocols to discover innovative solutions to challenging RF system issues.
  • Assisting leadership in defining and implementing a growth and training strategy for the RF Systems and Seeker section to effectively meet the engineering demands of our programs, relying on your vision and leadership for our team's future success.
A successful candidate will have experience in several of the following technology areas:
  • RF system design and architectures
  • RF communications and data links
  • Link budget design and analysis
  • Military communications systems - Satellite, Terrestrial, and Maritime networks
  • Waveform modeling, simulation, and design
  • Digital Signal Processing
  • Protocol development
  • Spread Spectrum Communications
  • Bench-level hardware testing, debugging, and performance evaluation
  • Software Defined Radios
  • Data Encryption
  • Antennas and Electromagnetics
Preferred qualifications include proficiency with some of the following tools and skills:
  • MatLab/Simulink and other high-level programming languages (Python, C++, etc.)
  • Ansys Systems Tool Kit (STK)
  • GNU Radio/Various SDR hardware platforms
  • Familiarity with standard RF test equipment and RF communications testing procedures
  • Board-level RF design
  • System implementation in FPGAs and RFSoCs
  • AFSIM
Minimum qualifications for this position include:
  • A BS degree in electrical engineering, physics, or a related discipline.
  • A minimum of 15 years of combined RF systems engineering experience (12 years with a Master's degree, 9 years with a PhD).
  • A strong background in developing and testing RF communications systems.
  • An active Secret security clearance with the ability to obtain a TS/SCI level clearance. Eligibility requires U.S. citizenship.
