Unit Mission:

The Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) is committed to delivering comprehensive, cutting-edge clinical services, educating medical students, residents, and observers, and engaging in clinical and translational research. The pediatric specialties service at VCU Health/the Children's Hospital of Richmond (CHoR) is the region's sole full-service children's hospital, providing extensive emergency, primary, secondary, advanced, tertiary, and long-term care across more than 40 pediatric medical and surgical disciplines.

Position Overview:

We are seeking qualified candidates for a Pediatric Otolaryngologist position. The Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at VCU is looking for a board-eligible/certified, fellowship-trained Pediatric Otolaryngologist to enhance a thriving academic practice. The compensation and academic rank will be competitive and aligned with experience. This role involves delivering clinical expertise and care for the surgical management of various Otolaryngology conditions. The physician will also contribute to the education and training of Otolaryngology residents, medical students, and observers, while pursuing excellence in research within their clinical focus. The Department promotes a culture of research and professional development vital to the Graduate Medical Education (GME) program and the faculty's career advancement.

Pediatric Services Development:

There is significant momentum towards improving children's health in the Richmond area. A new, state-of-the-art, 640,000 square foot ambulatory facility for pediatric outpatient medical, surgical, and radiologic services was inaugurated. This facility features:
  • 72 examination rooms organized in clinical pods to enhance a multidisciplinary care approach.
  • Clinical pods consisting of 12 examination rooms, 1 treatment room, and support space for a centralized clinical team.
  • Pediatric-specific imaging, operating rooms, and procedure rooms.
  • Dedicated pediatric faculty offices.
  • A connected 7-story parking structure with over 600 spaces.

Key Responsibilities:

Teaching: The faculty member will engage in the education of residents, medical students, and other learners, providing continuing medical education (CME) lectures for professionals.

Research: The faculty member is expected to establish a distinguished reputation in clinical and/or translational research, with an emphasis on publishing in peer-reviewed journals and securing potential external funding. Collaboration across disciplines to enhance research and clinical initiatives at VCU is anticipated, along with mentoring residents and students in their research endeavors.

Service: The faculty member will participate in departmental, Health System, and/or University committees as required. Engagement in professional activities within their field, such as serving as a reviewer, external committee member, or conference organizer, is encouraged.

Clinical Duties: This role is primarily focused on clinical responsibilities as a faculty physician. The faculty member will exemplify excellence in patient care and treatment within the specialty. They will also be responsible for the growth of their clinical practice and referral network, participating in multidisciplinary clinical initiatives.

Essential Qualifications:
  • Board certified/eligible in Otolaryngology
  • Fellowship trained
  • Licensed to practice medicine in Virginia upon hire
  • Demonstrated experience in fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at Virginia Commonwealth University
