Position Overview

This role primarily operates in a remote capacity, with occasional in-office meetings and training sessions. Candidates located in the Sacramento area are preferred.

Compensation: $70,000 - $90,000

The Insurance Underwriter II is responsible for making informed decisions regarding risk acceptability by employing underwriting principles through comprehensive loss exposure assessments. The individual must demonstrate the ability to make prudent choices in the selection, rating, management, and servicing of the assigned portfolio. This position works under the guidance of management, adhering to the authority granted to ensure profitability and foster growth.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate new business applications, renewal inquiries, and endorsement requests to achieve profitable underwriting outcomes, determining acceptability through thorough loss exposure analysis.
  • Enhance the growth of the assigned portfolio by promptly addressing inquiries, concerns, and complaints from agents, policyholders, and internal teams. Must work independently and engage with claims and risk management to gather additional information about the insured.
  • Foster and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues, agents, peers, and other business contacts. Ensure exceptional customer service through effective management of the portfolio to promote policy retention.
  • Compile and analyze data for the evaluation of the assigned portfolio. Assist Senior Underwriters in presenting potential accounts for non-renewal to the Underwriting Committee, gaining exposure to the appeal process with management's guidance.
  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with applicants, policyholders, claims, risk management, state agencies, and brokerage staff regarding coverage, premium acceptability, and policy language. Provide training and support to less experienced underwriting staff.
  • Assist in training other departments or companies as needed, either through scheduled sessions or informal inquiries.
  • Respond to policyholder inquiries or requests for coverage and assist in researching and developing information regarding the feasibility of their requests.
  • Conduct research and analysis on underwriting topics related to state regulatory requirements and the relevant policies across all states where coverage is provided.
  • Engage with state licensing boards to verify the status of applicants and policyholders' dental licenses.
  • Participate in continuing education to maintain agent licenses and stay proficient in underwriting multi-product, multi-state exposures, adhering to regulations filed with each state's Department of Insurance.
  • Update procedural manuals as necessary.
  • Act as a subject matter expert for identifying, researching, and testing Guidewire defects, mentoring and guiding underwriting assistants in their daily tasks.
  • Review reports and implement changes as required.
  • Maintain accuracy and adhere to department service level standards while ensuring strict compliance with regulatory requirements.

Non-Essential Duties:

  • Represent underwriting in relevant meetings and seminars, completing special projects as assigned by management.
  • Perform additional duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent industry experience.
  • Property and Casualty License is mandatory; candidates without this license must be willing to obtain it.
  • AIS designation is required; progress towards obtaining AU, ARM, RPLU, CPCU designations is encouraged.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in medical professional and/or commercial insurance is required.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Strong critical thinking skills, capable of making intentional, reflective decisions and evaluating alternatives.
  • Excellent communication skills, demonstrating approachability and openness to feedback.
  • Strong relationship-building skills, contributing actively to team goals.
  • Proficient in computer applications, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage workflow effectively, prioritize tasks, and resolve issues collaboratively.
  • Ability to work independently while exercising sound judgment and professionalism.

Working Conditions:

  • Constantly reviewing and analyzing data on a computer screen and physical documents.
  • Frequently maintaining a stationary position.
  • Occasionally moving around the office to access files and equipment.
