Position Overview

Compensation: $70,000 - $90,000

The Insurance Underwriter II is responsible for making informed decisions regarding risk acceptability by utilizing underwriting principles through loss exposure assessment. This position requires the ability to make sound judgments in the selection, rating, control, and servicing of the business portfolio. The role operates under the guidance of management within the authority granted to ensure profitability and foster growth.

Key Responsibilities
  • Risk Assessment: Evaluate new business applications, renewal questionnaires, and endorsement requests to achieve profitable underwriting outcomes. Determine the acceptability of requests through thorough loss exposure analysis.
  • Client Relations: Maintain the growth of the business portfolio by promptly addressing inquiries, concerns, and complaints from agents, policyholders, and internal teams. Work independently and collaborate with claims and risk management to gather additional information about the insured to assess the quality of the portfolio.
  • Relationship Management: Build and sustain positive working relationships with colleagues, agents, peers, and other business contacts. Provide exceptional customer service through daily management of the portfolio to ensure policy retention.
  • Data Analysis: Compile and interpret data for the evaluation of the assigned portfolio. Research, analyze, and assist Senior Underwriters in presenting potential accounts for non-renewal to the Underwriting Committee.
  • Communication: Effectively communicate both verbally and in writing with applicants, policyholders, claims, risk management, state agencies, and brokerage staff regarding coverage, premium acceptability, and policy language. Provide training and support to less experienced underwriting staff.
  • Training and Development: Assist in training other departments or companies as needed through scheduled training sessions or informal inquiries.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Research and analyze underwriting topics related to state regulatory requirements and the dental practices act across all states where coverage is written.
  • Continuing Education: Participate in continuing education courses to maintain agent licenses and stay updated on multi-product, multi-state exposures.
  • Documentation: Responsible for updating procedural manuals and acting as a subject matter expert for defect identification, research, and testing.
  • Reporting: Review reports and process changes as necessary while maintaining accuracy and compliance with regulatory standards.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent industry experience.
  • Property and Casualty License required; willingness to obtain if not held.
  • AIS designation required; progress towards AU, ARM, RPLU, CPCU designations is preferred.
  • Minimum of three years of experience in medical professional and/or commercial insurance.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments in a fast-paced environment.
Work Environment

This position involves constant data analysis on a computer screen and physical documents, with frequent stationary work and occasional movement around the office.
