Compensation: $70,000 - $90,000
The Insurance Underwriter II is responsible for making informed decisions regarding risk acceptability by utilizing underwriting principles through loss exposure assessments. The role requires the ability to make sound judgments in the selection, rating, management, and servicing of the business portfolio. The position operates under the guidance of management within the authority granted to ensure profitability and foster growth.

- Evaluate new business applications, renewal inquiries, and endorsement requests to achieve profitable underwriting outcomes. Assess acceptability through loss exposure analysis.
- Drive the growth of the business portfolio by promptly addressing inquiries, concerns, and complaints from agents, policyholders, and internal staff. Must work independently and engage with claims and risk management to gather additional information about the insured.
- Foster and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues, agents, peers, and other business contacts. Ensure excellent customer service through effective management of the portfolio to promote policy retention.
- Compile and analyze data for the evaluation of the assigned portfolio. Assist Senior Underwriters in presenting potential accounts for non-renewal to the Underwriting Committee.
- Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with applicants, policyholders, claims, risk management, state agencies, and brokerage staff regarding coverage, premium acceptability, and policy language. Provide training and support to less experienced underwriting staff.
- Assist in training other departments or companies as needed through scheduled sessions or informal inquiries.
- Respond to policyholder inquiries or requests for coverage and help research the feasibility of their requests.
- Under management direction, research and analyze underwriting topics related to state regulatory requirements and relevant acts.
- Engage with state licensing boards to verify the status of applicants and policyholders' licenses.
- Complete continuing education courses to maintain agent licenses. Stay informed and proficient while underwriting multi-product, multi-state exposures, adhering to regulations as filed with each state's Department of Insurance.
- Update procedural manuals as necessary.
- Act as a subject matter expert for defect identification, research, and testing in underwriting systems. Mentor and guide underwriting assistants in their daily tasks.
- Review reports and implement changes as required.
- Maintain accuracy and meet department service level standards while ensuring strict compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Represent underwriting in related meetings and seminars, and complete special projects as assigned by management.
- Perform additional duties as required.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent industry experience.
- Property and Casualty License is mandatory. If not held, must be willing to obtain.
- AIS designation required; progress towards AU, ARM, RPLU, CPCU designations is preferred.
- A minimum of three years of experience in medical professional and/or commercial insurance.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret policies, procedures, and regulations.
- Strong critical thinking skills for decision-making and problem-solving.
- Excellent communication skills, fostering trust and professional relationships.
- Ability to solve practical problems in varied situations with limited standardization.
- Proficient in computer applications, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Demonstrated verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
- Proficient in managing workflow, prioritizing tasks, and resolving issues with management and peers.
- Ability to perform job duties independently, exercising sound judgment and professionalism.
