Position Overview

L.I.F.E., INC is dedicated to supporting individuals with Intellectual Disabilities (ID) and other disabilities through various programs across the greater Baltimore area and Southern Maryland. Our mission emphasizes self-directed practices, ensuring that those we serve are at the forefront of their care.

We are seeking dedicated Board Members to join our governing body. This role presents a unique opportunity for individuals who are passionate about our mission and possess a history of effective board leadership. The responsibilities of a Board Member encompass advising on strategic initiatives, participating in evaluations, and overseeing financial management. Ideal candidates will have established leadership roles in business, government, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector, enabling them to attract other qualified board members.

This is a volunteer position that convenes quarterly at our headquarters.

General Summary: The Board Member will report directly to the Board President, providing mission-driven leadership and strategic governance. While the Executive Director manages daily operations, the collaboration between the Board and the Executive Director is essential and expected.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership, Governance, and Oversight:
  • Understand L.I.F.E.'s mission, programs, policies, and needs.
  • Attend board meetings regularly and engage actively in discussions.
  • Review agendas and supporting documents prior to meetings.
  • Stay informed about issues and trends affecting the organization.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to the Executive Director in developing and implementing strategic plans.
  • Evaluate outcomes and metrics to assess organizational impact and performance.
  • Approve the annual budget, audit reports, and significant business decisions while fulfilling legal and fiduciary responsibilities.
  • Contribute to the annual performance evaluation of the Executive Director.
  • Assist in identifying and recruiting new Board Members.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director and fellow board members to ensure board resolutions are executed.
  • Participate in committees or task forces and undertake special assignments.
  • Act as an ambassador for L.I.F.E. to stakeholders.
  • Promote a diverse board and staff that reflects the community served.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding internal organizational matters.
  • Understand the organization's financial status and ensure fiduciary duties are met.
  • Ensure compliance with legal requirements.

Fundraising Responsibilities:

  • Board Members are expected to prioritize philanthropy for L.I.F.E. and make annual contributions that reflect this commitment, enabling credible solicitation of support from foundations, organizations, and individuals.
  • All Board Members are encouraged to contribute annually to support the agency's mission.

Board Terms and Participation:

  • Board Members will serve a three-year term, with eligibility for reappointment for one additional term.
  • Meetings will be scheduled annually, with committee meetings coordinated alongside full board meetings.

Qualifications: The ideal candidates will possess the following attributes:

  • Familiarity with the organization and its industry.
  • Extensive professional experience with notable leadership achievements in business, government, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector.
  • A commitment to understanding L.I.F.E.'s beneficiaries, ideally through personal experience.
  • Strong diplomatic skills with an ability to cultivate relationships and build consensus among diverse individuals.
  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a passion for enhancing the lives of those we serve.
  • Contribute expertise in at least one area critical to Board governance.

Physical Requirements:

Volunteers must be able to sit, walk, talk, hear, and use hands and fingers regularly, with occasional requirements to stand, reach, stoop, kneel, or crouch.
