Shift: Full-Time (40 hours/week) Monday-Friday (8a-5p)

Advance your career with OU Health's LPN to BSN Degree Accelerator program through the University of Oklahoma College of Nursing, designed to empower Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) to seamlessly transition to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree. We cover the financial responsibilities, including costs for LPNs in the LPN to BSN RN program, which offers asynchronous classes, Oklahoma-based clinical rotations, and internet-based coursework to accommodate working nurses. This flexible hybrid program, comprising 60 credit hours, integrates 30 credit hours from advanced standing examination and 30 from program enrollment, providing an accessible pathway for LPNs to enhance their education and professional growth within the nursing field.

This benefit is available to those OU Health Employees who:
  • Are Full-Time and Part-Time (0.6 or more FTE) LPN employees
  • Have been continuously employed by OU Health for a minimum of 6 months
  • Have a minimum of 1 year LPN experience
  • All those admitted to the program must remain employed by OU Health through program completion.

General Description: Under the general supervision of a registered nurse, provides nursing care in a hospital-based outpatient department to an assigned group of patients with complex oncology diagnoses.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Administers medications safely under the direction of a physician or other medical personnel
  • Observes, records, and reports patient's condition and reaction to medications and treatments to physicians.
  • Provides care according to an established nursing plan.
  • Collects comprehensive data pertinent to the patient's health or situation
  • Ensures patient chart entries are made accurately and in a timely manner and forwards charts as appropriate
  • Communicates systematic reports to other care providers.
  • Assists in the coordination of care delivery; utilizes resources to promote the continuum of care.
  • Employs strategies to promote health in a safe environment.
  • Documents progress toward the attainment of outcomes.
  • Utilizes quality and evidence-based practices to deliver and improve care.
  • Works closely with more experienced clinicians for guidance and supervision.
  • Triage telephone calls for referral to other clinical team members
  • Infusion/Treatment Departments: demonstrates knowledge and skills in chemotherapy/biotherapy and blood products.
  • Radiation Oncology Departments: demonstrates knowledge of radiation therapies and procedures, including side effect and symptom management. Demonstrates ability to triage patients and coordinate with providers to ensure care needs are met
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skill in aspects of IV therapy and hydration
  • Manages patient care based on knowledge of cancer, cancer treatment, and side effects of such treatment.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Graduation from an approved Licensed Practical Nurse program. Completes Oncology Specific courses and competencies within 1 year of hire

Experience: Oncology or previous healthcare office experience preferred

License(s)/Certification(s)/Registration(s) Required: Current LPN License issued by the Oklahoma State Board of Nursing, or a current multistate compact LPN License (eNLC) required. Current Basic Life Support issued by the American Heart Association required upon hire.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of professional nursing theories, practices, techniques, and procedures.
  • Ability to organize, coordinate, plan and evaluate nursing needs of assigned patients.
  • Must be knowledgeable about operating room techniques if applying for a surgery position.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills
