Shift Available: Full Time Nights (36 hours/week) 6:45p-6:45a
The Medicine Nephrology Unit features 22 beds and operates under a collaborative care model, where a dedicated team of RN, LPN, and CTA provide comprehensive care for a group of ten patients. This unit caters to a diverse patient population, focusing on renal diseases, acute dialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and other medical diagnoses. Additionally, it includes two specialized comfort care suites, staffed by a dedicated concierge RN, ensuring compassionate support for patients and families during critical times.
Enhance your career through OU Health's LPN to BSN Degree Accelerator program, offered in partnership with the University of Oklahoma College of Nursing. This initiative is designed to facilitate the transition of Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree. OU Health covers the costs associated with this program, which includes asynchronous classes, local clinical rotations, and online coursework tailored for working nurses. This flexible hybrid program encompasses 60 credit hours, integrating advanced standing examination credits and program enrollment credits, providing a valuable opportunity for LPNs to advance their education and career in nursing.
This program is available to OU Health Employees who:
- Are Full-Time and Part-Time (0.6 or more FTE) LPN employees
- Have been continuously employed by OU Health for a minimum of 6 months
- Have at least 1 year of LPN experience
All participants must maintain employment with OU Health throughout the program.
General Description:
Under general supervision, the LPN delivers preventative and health care services to a designated group of patients within the OU Health facility.
Key Responsibilities:
The following responsibilities are essential to the role. Inability to perform these duties, with or without accommodation, may lead to disqualification from the position.
- Assist in nursing assessments through data collection, observation, and vital sign monitoring of assigned patients.
- Deliver care in accordance with an established nursing plan.
- Monitor changes in patient conditions and promptly notify supervisory personnel of significant alterations.
- Provide routine ostomy care, nasogastric tube placement and feeding, and manage oral-gastric tube procedures.
- Initiate and oversee oxygen therapy as per physician orders or unit protocols.
- Perform suctioning and cleaning of tracheotomy sites.
- Administer various forms of medication as prescribed.
- Prepare patients for routine physical examinations and assist physicians during these evaluations.
- May serve in the capacity of Surgical Tech if the position is available in the operating room.
Carry out additional responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Completion of educational requirements for NCLEX-PN examination.
Experience: No experience required; one or more years preferred.
Licensure/Certifications: Current LPN License issued by the Oklahoma State Board of Nursing or a current multistate compact LPN License (eNLC). Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association is required upon hire.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Understanding of professional nursing theories, practices, techniques, and procedures.
- Ability to organize, coordinate, plan, and evaluate the nursing needs of assigned patients.
- Familiarity with operating room techniques if applying for a surgical position.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
