Immigration Law Assistant

Catholic Charities of Los Angeles, Inc. is a dedicated non-profit legal organization committed to providing essential community education and legal advocacy for immigrant individuals and families. Our organization has been a pillar of support for immigrants in Southern California for over 15 years, focusing on various legal challenges, including those related to immigration and criminal matters.
Note: This position is exclusively available to Immigrant Justice Corps Justice Fellows who have been matched with our organization.
The individual in this role will assist attorneys by gathering and organizing necessary information for legal documentation, conducting legal research to aid in formulating robust arguments, reviewing and interpreting legal texts, compiling case materials, drafting briefs, reports, and memoranda, and maintaining communication with clients and their families to foster a positive attorney-client relationship. This position operates under the guidance of an attorney or an accredited representative.
Key Responsibilities:
- Drafts legal documents by compiling and organizing information for various legal forms, including complaints, declarations, and discovery requests.
- Conducts legal research by examining laws, statutes, regulations, and court opinions, and prepares legal memoranda.
- Organizes case materials by collecting and summarizing relevant information, documents, and evidence.
- Prepares for legal proceedings by developing trial briefs, exhibits, and motions.
- Manages schedules by recording and updating important deadlines, court dates, and meetings.
- Ensures confidentiality of client information.
- Enhances professional knowledge by engaging in continuing education, reading legal literature, and maintaining professional networks.
Qualifications:
- Juris Doctor (JD) or Master in Laws (LLM) is required.
- Must be awaiting bar examination results or planning to take the next exam.
- A minimum of 2 years of relevant experience is strongly preferred.
- Prior experience in immigration law or public interest law is highly desirable.
- Experience in a non-profit setting is advantageous.
- Fluency in Spanish is highly preferred.
Skills and Competencies:
- Experience with affirmative immigration applications and deportation defense is a plus.
- Experience working with vulnerable populations, especially children, detained individuals, or immigrant communities is preferred.
- Exceptional organizational, case management, legal research, and writing skills are essential, with a strong attention to detail.
- A proactive approach and the ability to think creatively are necessary.
- Commitment to contributing to the mission of promoting hope and advancing social justice for immigrants is required.
- Proficiency in database software, internet applications, project management tools, spreadsheet software, and word processing applications is expected.
