Position Overview

Key Responsibilities

This position is situated within a Federal Correctional Complex (FCC) that includes multiple institutions with varying security levels.

The incumbent will oversee civilian staff and assist in managing, developing, organizing, implementing, and maintaining a comprehensive food service program for the inmate population.

As an Assistant Food Service Administrator, you will be responsible for the complete management of food service operations within your assigned facility, under the guidance of the overall complex Food Service Administrator.

Your duties will include:

  • Planning, controlling, and evaluating departmental operations, including budget management for anticipated and unexpected expenses.
  • Establishing standards for sanitation, safety, and security.
  • Developing menus and assessing inmate satisfaction regarding food quality and quantity.
  • Coordinating all aspects of food preparation to ensure meals are properly prepared and served, including remote areas.

In conjunction with other correctional institution staff, you will maintain the security of the institution, with correctional responsibilities taking precedence over other duties.

Travel Requirements

Occasional travel may be necessary for training and work-related matters.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must meet the following requirements:

Education:

GS-11: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.M., if related.

GS-12: No substitution of education for specialized experience at this grade level.

Specialized Experience:

At least one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade level in federal service is required. This experience must have equipped you with the qualifications to successfully perform the duties of the position, typically involving food preparation and service for large groups.

Examples of qualifying experience include:

  • Supervising food preparation and ensuring compliance with cooking principles.
  • Overseeing dining room operations and ensuring timely food preparation.
  • Establishing safety and sanitary procedures during food preparation.

Combination of Education and Experience:

For GS-11 only: A combination of education and experience that equips you with the qualifications to perform the major duties of this position.
