Position Overview

As a Medication Administration Specialist, you will play a vital role in our healthcare team, ensuring that residents receive their medications safely, accurately, and promptly under the guidance of a licensed nurse and the general direction of the Wellness Director.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and dispense medications in accordance with state regulations, adhering to established policies and procedures.
  • Accurately document medication administration at the time of service, confirming the identity of the resident and recording essential details such as drug name, dosage, route, and administration time.
  • Review Medication Administration Records (MARs) immediately after medication administration and before the end of your shift to ensure all documentation is complete and accurate.
  • Inform your supervisor if you decide not to administer a medication as prescribed.
  • Effectively communicate at the end of your shift, sharing relevant information regarding resident care, concerns, and changes with incoming and outgoing staff.
  • Ensure the security of the medication cart and narcotic keys throughout your shift, conducting narcotic counts at the beginning and end of each shift in line with company policy.
  • Observe residents and report any changes in their psychosocial and physical conditions, including concerns such as skin breakdown, rashes, behavioral changes, or alterations in appearance to the Wellness Director.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized environment for residents, ensuring that their living spaces are tidy and that scheduled housekeeping tasks are completed as assigned.
  • Assist residents with daily living activities, including mobility, personal hygiene, feeding, and supervision according to their individual care plans.
  • Engage residents in activities, encouraging socialization and participation in planned events to foster friendships.
  • Communicate professionally with healthcare providers, including physicians and third-party specialists.
  • Maintain resident records daily, following company policies and procedures.
  • Adhere to established safety protocols, including infection control and quality assurance procedures, responding promptly to requests for assistance.
  • Report any complaints, grievances, or suspicions of abuse to the Wellness Director or Executive Director.
  • Participate in Wellness meetings and required training to ensure compliance with all regulations and policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to comprehend and follow instructions.
  • Ability to make routine decisions based on training and established guidelines, with problems typically resolved through clear procedures or by consulting a supervisor.
  • Successful completion of a state-approved medication administration course and any other required certifications to perform job duties in accordance with state regulations.

Preferred Skills and Abilities:

  • Prior experience as a Certified Medication Aide or Medication Technician.
  • Experience working with elderly populations.
  • Background in Assisted Living or Memory Care settings.
  • Understanding of dementia and related conditions.

Education and Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent educational experience.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment background check, drug screening, TB test, and physical examination.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to stand, walk, sit, and use hands and fingers for various tasks.
  • Capability to reach with hands and arms, talk, hear, and maintain vision.
  • Able to lift up to 50 pounds.

Working Conditions:

  • Regular interaction with co-workers, clients, and vendors.
  • Occasional weekend, evening, or night shifts may be required to ensure coverage.
  • Possible exposure to communicable diseases, infections, and other health hazards.
  • Risk of injury from assisting with client transfers or repositioning.
  • Potential exposure to various drugs, chemicals, and biological hazards.
