The Technology Development Lab at the New York Genome Center is at the forefront of innovative research, emphasizing collaboration in the realm of single-cell and spatial genomic assay development, enhancement, and application. The Associate Scientist II will engage with a dynamic team dedicated to pioneering and refining methodologies for genomic exploration. A robust foundation in molecular biology is essential, along with relevant experience in single-cell or spatial -omics technologies and/or next-generation sequencing (NGS) platforms. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are crucial, as this role involves collaboration across various functional teams to integrate new technologies into operational workflows. The ability to adapt in a fast-paced and evolving environment is vital. This position will report to the Laboratory Manager of the Technology Development Lab.

Key Responsibilities

  • Execute procedures related to DNA and RNA sequencing, encompassing sample quality control, library preparation, and quantification;
  • Conduct assays on tissue and/or cell/nuclei suspensions utilizing single-cell and spatial methodologies, including CITE-Seq, snRNA-Seq, Multiome, ASAP-Seq, Visium, DLP+, etc.;
  • Support procedures integral to the Direct Library Preparation + method, such as preparing cell and nuclei suspensions and reagent aliquoting for library preparation;
  • Perform spatial genomics assays (i.e., Visium) with guidance and oversight;
  • Contribute to the assessment, development, and troubleshooting of both new and established methods through experimental execution and other supervised tasks;
  • Maintain current standard operating procedures and modify as necessary;
  • Collaborate closely with colleagues in the Technology Innovation, Technology Development, and Production Lab teams, promoting knowledge transfer and cross-functional coordination;
  • Keep meticulous, reliable, and timely laboratory records, documenting all work and issues in appropriate databases and/or electronic lab notebooks;
  • Assist with routine maintenance of laboratory equipment and uphold laboratory cleanliness, organization, and safety protocols.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, or a related discipline is required;
  • A minimum of 4 years of experience in a molecular biology laboratory, with at least 2 years of demonstrated experience in next-generation sequencing library preparation protocols is strongly preferred;
  • Ability to work collaboratively in shifts with team members to complete complex assays;
  • Experience in handling tissue, cells/nuclei, and DNA & RNA, including dissociation, extraction, isolation, quantification, visualization, modification, hybridization, and PCR is preferred;
  • Familiarity with single-cell assays, spatial biology platforms, and a working knowledge of specialized genomic technologies is advantageous;
  • Comprehensive understanding of molecular biology equipment and related protocols (including RNA and DNA preparation, quantification, hybridization, PCR, multiplex amplification, and bead-based solutions) is highly preferred;
  • Experience with modern molecular biology tools, including prior work with single-cell suspensions and/or tissue samples, such as cell sorting, nuclei isolation, staining, or imaging is a plus;
  • Familiarity with automation and a willingness to learn new platforms (i.e., CellenONE) is beneficial;
  • Exceptional laboratory and organizational skills, with the ability to work independently and efficiently are essential;
  • Capability to multitask is crucial, alongside a focus on teamwork and collaboration;
  • Strong problem-solving abilities, excellent communication skills, and precise bench skills are required, along with a passion for continuous learning.

Work Flexibility

The New York Genome Center has implemented a flexible work policy to assist employees in balancing their professional and personal commitments. This position is eligible for a flexible work schedule with supervisory approval, requiring on-site presence five days a week. Occasional evening and weekend work may be necessary.

Salary & Benefits

The compensation range for this position is $67,000 - $73,500; the offered base pay may vary based on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.

The New York Genome Center (NYGC) is an independent, nonprofit academic research organization committed to advancing genomic research. NYGC scientists and staff are pioneering new methods for diagnosing and treating neurological diseases and cancer through their unique capabilities in whole genome sequencing, RNA sequencing, advanced analytics, and the development of genomic tools.
