Position Overview

The Office of Chief Medical Examiner undertakes investigations into fatalities occurring within New York City, particularly those resulting from criminal acts, accidents, suicides, unexpected health issues, unattended deaths, incidents in correctional facilities, or any cases that appear suspicious or unusual.

Key Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Assistant Directors of the Forensic Biology Department and a senior Criminalist, the selected candidate will assist in performing scientific analyses on biological specimens submitted to the Forensic Biology Department.

Typical duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Assisting in DNA analysis of evidence such as hair, bodily fluids, and other biological materials using advanced molecular techniques.
  • Supporting the analysis of gunshot residue and conducting various chemical and spectroscopic evaluations.
  • Participating in the anthropological examination of human remains.
  • Engaging in microscopic, chemical, physical, instrumental, and quantitative analyses of biological evidence.
  • Receiving comprehensive training in the collection, preservation, handling, and receipt of evidentiary materials.
  • Attending staff meetings, conferences, and training sessions for professional development.
  • Learning routine preventive maintenance and calibration of laboratory equipment and analytical instruments.
  • Performing other assigned duties as necessary.

Qualifications

1. A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution, specializing in criminalistics, forensic science, chemistry, biology, physics, molecular genetics, genetics, biochemistry, molecular biology, entomology, anthropology, ecology, or a closely related scientific or engineering discipline.

2. For Assignment to Level I-B:

In addition to the general qualifications, candidates must have at least one year of satisfactory full-time experience in criminalistics, forensic science, or analytical chemistry, or a satisfactory equivalent combination of education and experience.

3. For Assignment to Level II:

Candidates must have one of the following:

  • One year of experience as a Criminalist at Level I-B;
  • Two years of qualifying experience in criminalistics or forensic science;
  • A satisfactory combination of education and experience totaling two years.

4. For Assignment to Level III:

Candidates must have one of the following:

  • Two years of experience as a Criminalist at Level I-B and/or II;
  • Three years of qualifying experience in criminalistics or forensic science;
  • A satisfactory combination of education and experience totaling three years.

5. For Assignment to Level IV:

Candidates must have one of the following:

  • Three years of experience as a Criminalist at Level I-B, II, and/or III;
  • Four years of qualifying experience in criminalistics or forensic science;
  • A satisfactory combination of education and experience totaling four years.
