Position Overview

This position is situated within the Proton Therapy Center, part of the University of Maryland Medical System.

General Summary


Under general supervision, this role encompasses a variety of responsibilities for the University Maryland Greenebaum Cancer Center (GCC) faculty and Registered Nurse Coordinators. The individual will provide leadership support to Patient Services Coordinators, enhancing patient flow and care as needed.


Key Responsibilities


The following points outline the primary duties associated with this role:


Leadership Duties:
  • Serve as a lead for fellow Patient Service Coordinators, offering training and orientation to new hires.
  • Assist in orienting new physicians and nurse coordinators regarding clinical procedures.
  • Provide constructive feedback and recommendations to management, including mentoring and disciplinary insights.
  • Assess and develop processes to optimize patient flow and care.
  • Ensure adequate staff coverage for all clinics in the absence of other Patient Service Coordinators.
  • Support nurse coordinators with non-clinical responsibilities.

Patient Service Coordinator Duties:
  • Prepare for upcoming clinics by organizing patient charts and reviewing them for completeness, including recent physician notes and laboratory data.
  • Assist with the retrieval, tracking, and delivery of patient charts in an ambulatory setting.
  • Guide patients and staff through insurance processes and referral requirements, verifying insurance benefits and obtaining necessary authorizations.
  • Schedule ancillary tests and procedures, as well as inpatient discharge appointments.
  • Maintain accurate patient information in registration databases, achieving a 95% accuracy rate.
  • Manage patient visit scheduling and provide accurate information to patients.
  • Respond to general patient inquiries and triage calls to appropriate clinical staff.
  • Ensure timely delivery of disability, FMLA, and insurance forms to medical staff.
  • Order and maintain office and clinical supplies, adhering to departmental guidelines.
  • Provide cross-coverage for related job functions as needed.
