Job Overview

POSITION SUMMARY

The Fixed Route-Training Specialist is accountable for the preparation, execution, and assessment of behind-the-wheel training for fixed route operators. This role involves conducting interviews, facilitating operator orientation, delivering pre-licensing training, and implementing transit safety programs. Additionally, the specialist provides training support to the Training and Safety teams as required. The position reports directly to the Assistant Director of Transit Operations.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Primary Duties Include:

  • Assisting in the design and execution of training programs aimed at enhancing the skills of operational staff, including non-CDL and CDL new hire training, as well as remedial and refresher courses.
  • Facilitating behind-the-wheel training and orientation sessions for all fixed route operators.
  • Delivering instructional content through various methods such as role-playing, simulations, team activities, group discussions, videos, and lectures.
  • Conducting daily assessments and evaluations of employee skill levels.
  • Preparing all necessary training for the CDL examination.
  • Ensuring that all new hires satisfy minimum qualifications, including background and DMV checks.
  • Recommending route and stop modifications to supervisors and performing safety site evaluations as necessary.
  • Training and encouraging others to adhere to proper driving and safety standards.
  • Participating in Safety Committee meetings and providing management with statistical insights on operator performance and training requirements.
  • Collaborating with Operations Supervisors and Safety & Training Managers to deliver thorough safety meetings and plans.
  • Maintaining precise records and preparing comprehensive reports.
  • Monitoring customer service, fare inspections, and safe operational practices.
  • Conducting ongoing ride-alongs to ensure the effective transfer of knowledge, skills, and attitudes from the classroom to on-the-job performance.
  • Providing updates and training on equipment improvements.
  • Assisting in the development of alternative training methods if expected outcomes are not met.
  • Enforcing a safety culture within the department, coordinating re-training and safety instruction, and fostering a positive work environment by offering equitable training opportunities to all employees.
  • Performing other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS


Education and Experience:

  • Associate's degree from an accredited institution or equivalent professional experience.
  • A minimum of two years of relevant experience in training or supervision.
  • A valid commercial driver's license with Class B Passenger endorsement in North Carolina and a clean driving record.
  • In-depth knowledge of the street system, significant buildings, and facilities.
  • Comprehensive understanding of transportation policies and procedures.
  • Thorough knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing bus operations.
  • Proficient in all operator responsibilities.
  • Ability to maintain a flexible schedule and work emergency shifts.
  • Capability to accurately record information and maintain simple records.
  • Proficient in using PCs, including Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to interact courteously with the public and drivers.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow both oral and written instructions.
  • Dependability and ability to report to work during adverse weather conditions.
  • Must meet DOT physical requirements and maintain a valid DOT card.

An equivalent combination of related education and experience may be considered, excluding High School Diploma, GED, Licenses, or Certifications.


WORKING CONDITIONS


The role involves working in an environment with potential exposure to dust, noise, and temperature variations. There may be moderate exposure to unpleasant working conditions, including dust, noise, temperature, weather, petroleum products, and chemicals while visiting operational facilities. Travel may be necessary to various office locations.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS


This position is classified as Sedentary Work, requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work primarily involves sitting, with walking and standing required only occasionally.
