ROLE OVERVIEW:
The Clinical Laboratory Scientist is responsible for conducting a range of routine and specialized tests and procedures that assist physicians in diagnosing and treating patients across multiple disciplines, including Chemistry, Hematology/Coagulation, Immunohematology, Histocompatibility, Flow Cytometry, Molecular Pathology, Ancillary Testing, Microbiology, and other specialized areas.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Independently execute routine and complex laboratory procedures, ensuring adherence to established turnaround times while maintaining technical and organizational proficiency.
(a) ensure the accuracy of patient test results; (b) assess instrument performance and quality control data to confirm the reliability of analytical outcomes; (c) correlate findings with other laboratory results and clinical conditions; (d) identify and resolve technical or instrument-related issues that may lead to unexpected results. Collaborate with section supervisors/directors to develop solutions based on analytical data.
Perform standardization, calibration, preventative maintenance, and troubleshooting of laboratory instruments.
Contribute to the development and design of new testing methodologies; engage in the evaluation and implementation of new instruments or procedures.
Participate in the education and training of clinical laboratory science for students, residents, and new staff; actively engage in departmental continuing education and in-service training initiatives.
Involve in quality assurance and regulatory compliance activities, which may include proficiency testing, participation in TQM/CQI committees, developing quality assurance monitors, updating procedure manuals, and assisting with competency assessments.
Provide guidance and support to medical laboratory technicians and other personnel regarding specimen acceptability, unusual results, instrument issues, and out-of-control situations.
Maintain effective communication with healthcare professionals regarding laboratory results, procedures, and technologies.Perform additional projects and miscellaneous tasks as assigned, including inventory management and reagent preparation. Assume leadership responsibilities in the absence of the supervisor, in accordance with CAP/CLIA standards.

QUALIFICATIONS:
To succeed in this role, candidates must meet the following criteria:
Education / Training:
Baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution with a minimum of 16 semester hours in biology (including microbiology) and 16 semester hours in chemistry (including organic or biochemistry).
Completion of a clinical laboratory program accredited by NAACLS or equivalent laboratory training in each specialty where high complexity testing is performed.
Proof of clinical internship completion and eligibility for certification exams.
Work Experience:
Completion of a NAACLS accredited clinical internship or equivalent experience as required by the ASCP Board of Certification or other recognized certifying bodies.
Certification, Licensure, Registration:
U.S. certification or eligibility for certification by recognized agencies such as ASCP or AMT is required.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Physical Effort:
This role requires significant walking and standing, with occasional light lifting for supply management.
Work Environment:
Work is conducted in a clinical laboratory setting, handling hazardous reagents and infectious materials, with potential exposure to hazardous medications or waste.
