GENERAL OVERVIEW:


The primary role involves supporting the comprehensive oversight of the designated laboratory sector, which encompasses daily functions, quality assurance, process enhancement, equipment upkeep, and staff training and proficiency evaluation.

Assists in the management of the laboratory during the absence of the Manager.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assists the supervisor in the routine operations of the department, including personnel management, timekeeping, onboarding, and training.

As a Team Leader, takes on specific responsibilities of the supervisor in their absence, adhering to CAP/CLIA standards, which includes aiding in employee assessments, recruitment, and employee relations as necessary.

In alignment with various regulatory and accrediting bodies, reviews, assesses, and coordinates quality assurance, quality control, and proficiency testing; ensures maintenance of documentation records.

Assists in quality variance investigations and the formulation of process improvement strategies. Engages in projects, committees, and other laboratory initiatives as assigned.
Acts as a technical resource for instruments and departmental protocols. Supervises instrument troubleshooting, maintenance, and technical procedures. Coordinates methodology and instrument evaluation and validation studies.

Collaborates with the supervisor to develop, maintain, and update procedural manuals, workflows, and policies in accordance with various regulatory and accrediting standards; assists in the preparation for test launches.

In partnership with the supervisor, designs and implements employee orientation, education, training, and competency assessments regarding test methodologies, departmental policies, and instrumentation.

Coordinates clinical education programs for medical laboratory science students, as well as residents, fellows, and medical students upon request.

Responsible for creating curriculum content, delivering both practical and theoretical instruction, crafting assessments, grading, and performance evaluations, as well as interviewing and selecting students.

Conducts routine and complex procedures within the specific discipline utilizing laboratory instruments or manual techniques.

Education / Training:


Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution with 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) in biology, including one semester in microbiology, and 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) in chemistry, including one semester in organic or biochemistry, which may be obtained within or in addition to the baccalaureate degree.

Completion of a clinical laboratory approved or accredited program by NAACLS or at least three months of documented laboratory training in each specialty in which the individual performs high complexity testing.


Work Experience:

A minimum of 2 years of direct technical experience is required, having worked within an accredited, licensed laboratory, with at least 2 years of specific experience in the laboratory discipline being applied for.

Completion of an accredited clinical internship or equivalent experience/training as required by the Board of Registry.

Certification, Licensure, Registration:
Must be certified per policy; specialty certification in the appropriate discipline preferred ASCP Medical Laboratory Scientist
