About the Opportunity

This position is part of the Abbott team in the Heart Failure Division, working out of our Pleasanton, CA or Burlington, MA location. Our team is focused on helping people with heart failure manage their health and ultimately change and save lives. As an Electrical Engineer, you will be primarily working on the CardioMEMS HF system, which remotely monitors changes in pulmonary artery (PA) pressure, an early indicator of the onset of worsening heart failure, to aid physicians in preventing worsening heart failure, lower heart failure mortality rates, and improve quality of life for our heart failure patients.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and evaluate prototype Printed Circuit Boards, other custom electronic components, fixtures, and tools.
  • Apply advanced engineering and scientific principles to the evaluation and solution of technical problems.
  • Initiate and coordinate engineering work, both with internal teams and external suppliers.
  • Identify and implement effective, cost-efficient, and best practices to execute processes.
  • Lay out and construct prototype tools, designs, and tests required for development purposes.
  • Conduct evaluations, tests, and analyses related to feasibility and function.
  • Perform troubleshooting and fault isolation activities on breadboards and test benches.
  • Document custom tools with specifications, schematics, and mechanical layouts.
  • Draft and iterate specifications for external suppliers to meet design goals.
  • Plan, coordinate, and execute design and documentation activities in support of project goals.
  • Comply with FDA regulations, Company policies, operating procedures, processes, and task assignments.
  • Maintain positive and cooperative communications and collaboration with all levels of employees, customers, contractors, and vendors.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or related field.
  • Minimum 10 years relevant work experience in performing layout, construction, and evaluation of prototype Printed Circuit Boards, fixtures, and tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop new design features as part of existing systems.
  • Documented record of delivering tool engineering information that adds value to management's decision-making process.
  • Ability to understand and comply with applicable FDA regulations and Company operating procedures, processes, policies, and tasks.
  • Advanced personal computer skills, including spreadsheet, word processing, database management, and specialized applications.
  • Ability to work in a highly matrixed and geographically diverse business environment.
  • Ability to leverage and/or engage others to accomplish projects.
  • Strong verbal and written communications with ability to effectively communicate at multiple levels in the organization.
  • Multitasking, prioritization, and meeting deadlines in a timely manner.
  • Ability to travel approximately 10%, including internationally.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced credential or professional certification in a relevant discipline/concentration.
  • Training and experience in manufacturing processes and methods, especially in the manufacturing of medical devices.
  • Experience working in a broader enterprise/cross-division business unit model.
