Job Purpose and Primary Objectives:

Benchmark Space Systems, a leader in small satellite propulsion systems and in-space mobility services, is looking for an experienced Engineering Technician to join our team. The Engineering Technician will work with our Propulsion Development team to inspect, clean, and assemble mechanical and electrical hardware, maintain facilities, and test equipment to meet compliance requirements. As part of the Technology organization at Benchmark, this role works closely with the R&D and Engineering teams.

This role is on-site at our Pleasanton, California location.

Benchmark designs and produces propulsion systems that maneuver small satellites between low earth orbit and the moon. These systems utilize non-toxic propellants to provide thrust to transfer to a specific orbit, maintain position, avoid collisions, and a range of other applications. These capabilities enable activities such as on-orbit refueling, in-space manufacturing, re-entry, and more. Measurements of Success/Primary Job Responsibilities:

At its core, Benchmark is an entrepreneurial, fast-paced organization. We need all employees to problem solve, ask questions, and work across departments as needed. Primary responsibilities include:

Work closely and creatively with engineers on non-routine tasks, often without formal work instructions.
Complete certification as part of the company's Propulsion Red Team, including:
Operating thruster test stands for hotfire test operations.
Handling rocket propellants and working with high-pressure systems.
Managing hazardous operations in the laboratory environment.

In collaboration with Engineers, design, build, operate, and maintain test fixtures, setups, and ad hoc equipment for R&D projects, including development and qualification testing on mechanical and electrical hardware.
Perform light fabrication tasks, including operation of manual machining tools, welders, and common shop tools.
Record testing data and assist in preparation of test reports.
Maintain or create documentation during fault finding, maintenance, or upgrade activities.
Assist in basic electronics and controls projects.
Maintain company equipment to meet working standards as required by maintenance schedules.
At all times, maintain Benchmark's outstanding reputation for operating at the highest levels of honesty, integrity, accountability, and transparency.

Education and/or Experience:
3-5 years of relevant experience.
Associate's degree in a related technical field or equivalent experience.
Experience with high pressure and hazardous fluid systems.
Demonstrated experience with general mechanical fabrication techniques.
U.S. Person required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Basic understanding of electronics and controls systems.
Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and schematics.
Experience with high pressure fluid components – including hands-on experience with common fluid fittings, and hydraulic/pneumatic tube bending, flaring, and preparation.

Excellent communication skills and ability to work in a team environment.
Proficiency in basic computer skills and common software like Microsoft Office.
Ability to work in an entrepreneurial, fast-paced, and matrixed cross-functional environment.
Willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies and processes.
A passion for space technology and emerging ecosystems in space activities.

What makes you stand out:
Previous experience and/or certifications within the aerospace and defense industry.
Component quality and dimensional inspection experience.
Experience working with rocket or jet propulsion systems.
Strong organization, record-keeping, and written/verbal communication skills.
Basic wet chemistry practices and safe handling of hazardous materials.
Basic machining skills (drilling, milling, lathe, tapping, etc.).
Basic welding skills – especially TIG/GTAW.
Experience with Linux command line, Python, or other scripting languages.
