Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Patient Services Representative to join our team at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. As a Patient Services Representative, you will play a vital role in ensuring that our patients receive exceptional care and service.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide Exceptional Patient Care: Welcome patients upon arrival, promote the use of new technologies, educate patients on their financial obligations, and collect payments when applicable.
  • Schedule Appointments: Schedule subsequent appointments within the continuum of care, connect patients to financial advocacy resources when necessary, and update patient demographics and insurance coverage information.
  • Display Strong Customer Service Skills: Ensure that patients and family members have a positive experience at UPMC physician practices, hospitals, and outpatient surgery departments.
  • Assist with Administrative Duties: Scan medical records, fax documents, and perform other administrative tasks as needed.
  • Guide Patients through Self-Arrival Technology: Assist patients in using self-arrival technology or check them in at the desk, depending on their preference.
  • Schedule Ancillary Services: Schedule or connect patients to resources for ancillary services at checkout.
  • Understand Service Recovery Principles: Take appropriate action to recover from service that does not meet the expectation of the UPMC Experience.
  • Assist with Financial Education: Educate patients on their financial responsibility and connect them to advocacy resources as needed.
  • Obtain Consent and Verify Insurance Benefits: Obtain signature of patient or family member for consent to treatment and financial responsibility, and confirm/verify insurance benefits with the appropriate carrier.
  • Promote Patient Portal: Promote the MyUPMC patient portal and assist patients in registration when applicable.
  • Collect Payments: Collect copayments and any other applicable patient payments at the point of service.
  • Provide a Warm Greeting: Provide a warm greeting for all patients.
  • Register Patients in Biometrics Program: Register patients in the Biometrics program and explain the benefits.
  • Confirm and Update Patient Registration Information: Confirm and/or update patient registration information at checkout.
  • Triage Phone Calls: Appropriately distribute/triage phone calls to other areas and/or clinical providers.
  • Schedule Follow-up Appointments: Schedule follow-up appointments within the practice at checkout.
Qualifications
  • High School Graduate or Equivalent: Completion of high school graduate or equivalent is required.
  • Personal Computer Skills: Experience with personal computer-based applications, other various office equipment, and proficient typing skills are preferred.
  • Medical Terminology Knowledge: Knowledge of medical terminology is preferred.
  • Health Records Systems Experience: Prior experience with Medipac, Epic, or other health records systems is preferred.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances
  • Act 34: Act 34 clearance is required.
