Position: Packaging Test Engineer

Overview

This role is responsible for the development and maintenance of standardized protocols and procedures related to the operation of a packaging testing laboratory. This facility serves as a comprehensive performance testing center for UN-rated packaging solutions, including steel, fiber, and poly drums, as well as composite Intermediate Bulk Containers (IBCs). Testing activities are conducted in accordance with DOT regulations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Establish and uphold technical specifications and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the Packaging Testing Laboratory.
  • Create and implement standardized training materials regarding testing methodologies and processes.
  • Support laboratory technicians in the setup and validation of new testing methods.
  • Utilize SolidWorks for the creation of parts, assemblies, and technical drawings.
  • Manage the calibration program for the Packaging Testing Laboratory, ensuring timely replacement of outdated equipment.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing facilities on matters related to UN/DOT testing, development of standardized procedures, and addressing customer and quality concerns.
  • Assist management in research for product enhancements and specific customer product development initiatives.
  • Engage in North American product development activities, including product testing and preparation of procurement authorizations, along with comprehensive presentations to management.
  • Participate in the selection and approval of packaging components based on sample evaluations.
  • Support the technical manager with product specifications, technical documentation, and training on new products from both Mauser Packaging Solutions and external vendors.
  • Adhere to company policies and regulations.
  • Communicate safety, environmental, and quality concerns to management.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering, Material Science, or a related field, or a combination of education and experience.
  • 0-5 years of experience in plastics processing and product program management.
  • Familiarity with polymer material testing and failure analysis, including instrumental analysis techniques (e.g., FTIR, tensile testing).
  • Proven problem-solving and analytical skills to address technical challenges.
  • Ability to utilize precision measuring instruments and interpret specifications, charts, and diagrams accurately.
  • Project-oriented with minimal supervision required; proactive and adaptable with a sense of urgency.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, along with effective presentation abilities.
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks 3D CAD design software.
  • Competence in standard MS Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Project.

Physical Requirements

The role requires the ability to operate drum and IBC handling equipment for both full and empty packaging. Visual acuity is necessary for processing information. The employee will be expected to sit for extended periods, stand, use hands for handling, reach with arms, and communicate effectively. The position also involves walking, bending, kneeling, crouching, climbing, and balancing. Specific vision abilities include the ability to distinguish color shades, close vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
