About the Legal Team

Roku, Inc. is in search of a seasoned and proactive attorney with a robust grasp of data privacy and consumer protection regulations to join our legal department. This role presents an exciting opportunity to offer legal insights on unique and emerging challenges within the TV streaming sector, supporting Roku's offerings from conception through to launch and execution.

Role Overview

The ideal candidate will possess extensive knowledge of international privacy and data security laws, experience in facilitating product launches, and a proven ability to convert legal standards into practical guidance for Product, User Experience, and Engineering teams. A solid understanding of online media, digital advertising technologies, internet technologies, and cloud computing is essential, along with experience in applying privacy-by-design principles. The successful applicant will demonstrate strong analytical skills, sound judgment, a practical approach to problem-solving, and the flexibility to adapt in a dynamic environment. Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate closely with Product and Engineering teams to develop Roku's consumer electronics and streaming platform, ensuring legal risks are effectively managed while achieving business objectives and safeguarding user interests globally.
  • Provide legal counsel on privacy and data security provisions in agreements related to content and digital product distribution.
  • Offer guidance on a broad spectrum of legal matters, including consumer protection, privacy, and data security laws, ensuring compliance with U.S. and international regulations and industry best practices through the application of privacy-by-design principles.
  • Review user flows, product feature documentation, advertising materials, promotions, and other consumer-facing communications to ensure adherence to relevant data protection, consumer protection, and advertising laws.
  • Engage cross-functionally with various Roku business units, including user experience, devices, mobile, web, advertising products, programming, content and services, engineering, marketing, and customer support.
  • Assist in developing scalable processes for the legal review of new product launches.
  • Stay informed on the latest developments in laws, regulations, and industry trends related to media, advertising technology, big data, over-the-top (OTT) services, Internet of Things (IoT), and smart devices, including federal and state data privacy laws and consumer protection regulations.
  • Collaborate with other legal team members to address the company's broader data collection, storage, usage, and transfer practices.
  • Support Roku's privacy compliance initiatives as necessary.

Ideal Qualifications

  • A minimum of 8 years of experience as a practicing attorney.
  • Significant in-house experience advising on data privacy, data protection, and the legal aspects of product development in the technology sector (experience in a consumer-facing internet company is preferred).
  • Strong understanding of global privacy and data security laws; familiarity with other consumer laws is advantageous.
  • Knowledge of content and digital product distribution agreements, including MVPD, DMVPD, and application development agreements (e.g., Apple, Google).
  • A passion for technology and the ability to quickly grasp complex technology and product use cases.
  • A Bachelor's degree and a Juris Doctorate from a U.S. accredited law school.
  • Licensed to practice law in the United States.
