About the Legal Team

Roku, Inc. is on the lookout for a skilled and proactive attorney with extensive knowledge of data privacy and consumer protection regulations to join our legal department. This role presents an exciting opportunity to provide legal insights on innovative and complex issues within the TV streaming sector, supporting Roku's products and services from conception through to launch and execution.

Role Responsibilities

The ideal candidate will possess a robust understanding of global privacy and data security laws, experience in product launches, and the ability to translate legal requirements into practical guidance for Product, User Experience, and Engineering teams. A solid grasp of online media, digital advertising technologies, Internet technologies, and cloud computing is essential, along with experience in implementing privacy-by-design strategies. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong analytical skills, sound judgment, and a flexible approach to problem-solving, thriving in a dynamic environment while making informed decisions amidst uncertainty. Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate closely with Product and Engineering teams to develop Roku's consumer electronics and streaming platform, ensuring legal risks are managed while advancing business objectives and safeguarding user interests globally.
  • Provide legal advice on privacy and data security clauses in agreements related to content and digital product distribution.
  • Offer guidance on a broad spectrum of legal matters, including consumer protection and data privacy laws, ensuring compliance with U.S. and international regulations and industry best practices through privacy-by-design principles.
  • Review user interactions, product feature documentation, advertising materials, promotions, and other consumer-facing communications to ensure adherence to applicable data protection, consumer protection, and advertising regulations.
  • Engage cross-functionally with various Roku business units, including user experience, devices, mobile, web, advertising products, programming, content services, engineering, marketing, and customer support.
  • Assist in developing scalable processes for the legal review of new product launches.
  • Stay informed on the latest developments in laws, regulations, and industry trends relevant to media, advertising technology, Big Data, OTT, IoT, and smart devices, including federal and state data privacy and consumer protection laws.
  • Collaborate with other legal team members to address the company's broader data management practices.
  • Support Roku's privacy compliance initiatives as necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A minimum of 8 years of experience as a practicing attorney.
  • Significant in-house experience advising on data privacy, data protection, and the legal aspects of product development in the technology sector (experience with consumer-facing Internet companies is preferred).
  • Strong knowledge of global privacy and data security laws; familiarity with other consumer laws is a plus.
  • Understanding of content and digital product distribution agreements, including MVPD, DMVPD, and application development agreements (e.g., Apple, Google).
  • A passion for technology and the ability to quickly grasp complex technology and product use cases.
  • A Bachelor's degree and a Juris Doctorate from a U.S. accredited law school.
  • Licensed to practice law in the United States.
