Job Description

Individuals selected for the Manufacturing Associate role may be assigned to various functions within the operational workflow of our Crown Health Care Laundry Services facility. The need for personnel may arise in either or both operational sectors - Soil or Clean. Assignments are based on hiring requirements and production demands in each sector. Below is a concise overview of each operational area within the facility. Compensation rates and scheduled hours are contingent upon the assigned area.

The primary objective of the Manufacturing Associate is to rotate through diverse positions within the facility to support the receiving, sorting, washing, drying, pressing, and loading of linens for delivery to various healthcare institutions. You will acquire the skills to operate different production machinery as required for your daily tasks. Equipment must be utilized in a manner that meets and surpasses our customer expectations consistently while ensuring safety.

Employees are expected to familiarize themselves with all machinery and rotate as necessary. The typical learning period for each role does not exceed 2-5 working days. Standards must be achieved for each position within two weeks of employment and maintained throughout tenure. Employees will be assigned to roles that align with production requirements and their individual skills and capabilities.

All Manufacturing Associates, whether engaged in Soil or Clean Operations, will be required to undertake additional duties as assigned. All employees are expected to comply with all quality and safety standards. All Manufacturing Associates hired must be capable of performing the essential functions of the role, with or without reasonable accommodation.

High School diploma or GED is preferred.

Strong teamwork abilities are essential.

Employees must be adaptable to transition between various roles as required.

Soil Operations

The primary function of this position is to safely categorize returned, soiled linens into appropriate classifications in preparation for washing, and to ready the carts for the Clean Operations side of the facility.

Soil Operations: Duties & Essential Job Functions

1. Open customer-returned soil bags (bags weigh approximately 45 lbs.), dispose of plastic bags, and spread the contents for visibility on the soil belt. Pre-sort classifications as necessary. Production standards are 45 bags or 2000 lbs. opened per hour for each operator.

2. Operators on the work platform rotate between multiple positions, moving up and down the belt to sort into the appropriate bins or slots. This is a collaborative effort, where the team works together to ensure linens are sorted safely, efficiently, and accurately.

3. Transport empty carts to the designated area for cleaning and reuse.

4. Cart Cleaners are responsible for ensuring that the carts used for returned soiled laundry are cleaned, sterilized, dried, and lined to prepare for clean linens to be loaded into each cart from the Clean Operations, readying the carts for dispatch.

Clean Operations

Clean Linen Operations: Duties & Essential Job Functions

Employees will learn the following equipment/positions and will be required to rotate as necessary:

Catcher:

Will secure linen carts and learn to stack and build carts proficiently according to our standards to meet customer expectations.

Remove linens from the Folder machine, count and stack them per stacking standards, and transport the full baskets to the next staging area.

Secure a linen cart, which may involve pushing, pulling, and positioning the cart appropriately.

Remove items from the conveyor, typically catching items from up to six stations.

If an item is caught or jammed in the machine, they must notify maintenance. Only maintenance or production managers are authorized to resolve jams.

The catcher may also transport empty carts to the dryer area and bring back another cart to their work area.

Adhere to quality standards regarding the quantity and quality of stacking.

If the Catcher identifies any items that do not belong to Crown Health Care Laundry Services, such as scrubs or blankets, these must be set aside. The Catcher must also remove any stained items that may have been overlooked.

The Catcher will frequently make quality decisions regarding the readiness of linens for cart loading.

The Catcher may discover items stuck in the machine or malfunctioning equipment and must determine when to call for maintenance.

Hand Fold:

The primary responsibility of the Hand Folder is to take items as they exit the washer or presser, hand fold, stack, and place them on the appropriate cart or belt for transport to the next stage of the process.

1. Remove products from the previous process and identify through on-the-job training how many items per stack.

2. Position the cart at a comfortable waist level for efficient folding.

3. Fold items and place them on the countertop.

4. For larger items, group folding may be required, where partners collaborate to fold items lengthwise.

5. Fill the cart accordingly.

6. Transport the cart to the next work area.

The Hand Folder will make numerous quality decisions, such as identifying holes or tears in items, determining if they are stained and require re-washing, and recognizing non-company products that need to be removed.

Ironer:

The primary role of the Ironer is to process clean linens through the Ironer machine (Feeder, Ironer, Folder).

1. Bend down and lift flat sheets, blankets, and/or pillowcases from the platform, ensuring safe handling before feeding them into the ironer.

2. Feed linens into the spreader using spreader clips or a spreader arm.

3. The first feed draws the linen into the spreader, and the second feed draws it into the ironer.

4. Multiple individuals may feed pillowcases simultaneously.

The Ironer must determine when an item should go into the re-wash basket based on established guidelines, such as holes, stains, or any quality concerns.

If an item is stuck in the machine or if the machine is malfunctioning, the Ironer must decide when to call for maintenance. Always adhere to all safety protocols for the equipment and position.

Shipping Clerk:

The primary function of the Shipping Clerk is to prepare finished carts of clean, processed linens for shipment and ensure they are loaded onto delivery vehicles. The incumbent will build carts, accurately operate the scale to weigh the carts, and record the information as required.

The Shipping Clerk is responsible for:

  • Maintaining records of orders
  • Attaching a copy of the order form to the side of the cart
  • Tracking which orders have been filled and which are pending
  • Collecting finished carts by proactively seeking them throughout the facility
  • Transporting carts to the weighing area

Weigh the carts:
  • Position the cart on the scale
  • Record the weight in the software program
  • Remove the weighed cart from the scale
  • Push the next cart onto the scale and repeat the process

Enter the necessary information into the Shipping Software.

May assist in loading delivery vehicles by transporting weighed carts as required.

May fill in for other positions as necessary, such as production operator/builder.

Basic computer skills and a willingness to learn new software applications are essential.

Strong recordkeeping and analytical skills are required.
