Job Summary

Bannock County is seeking a highly skilled Code Enforcement Officer to join our team. As a Code Enforcement Officer, you will be responsible for ensuring compliance with local codes and ordinances related to planning, development, and road and bridge regulations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct Regular Site Visits: Conduct regular and as-needed site visits to inspect properties for code compliance.
  • Document Observations: Document observations and gather evidence of code violations.
  • Issue Code Violation Letters: Write and issue code violation letters to property owners, clearly explaining the nature of the violation, required corrective actions, and deadlines for compliance.
  • Issue Infractions and Citations: Issue infractions and citations in coordination with the Bannock County Sheriff's Office.
  • Maintain Accurate Records: Maintain accurate records of all letters, infractions, and citations issued.
  • Respond to Public Inquiries: Respond to public inquiries and complaints regarding code enforcement issues.
  • Provide Information and Guidance: Provide information and guidance to property owners and the general public about code requirements and compliance.
  • Maintain Detailed Records: Maintain detailed and accurate records of inspections, violations, and enforcement actions.
  • Collaborate with Prosecutor's Office: Collaborate with the Bannock County Prosecutor's Office to escalate violations that require legal action.
  • Attend Court Proceedings: Attend court proceedings as needed to provide testimony and support prosecution efforts.
Requirements
  • Knowledge of Local Codes and Ordinances: Knowledge of local codes, ordinances, and regulations related to planning, development, and road and bridge maintenance.
  • Conflict Resolution Methods: Knowledge of conflict resolution methods.
  • Ability to Conduct Field Inspections: Ability to conduct field inspections, which may involve walking on uneven terrain, climbing stairs, and exposure to various weather conditions.
  • Ability to Interpret and Apply Codes: Ability to interpret and apply applicable state, county, and local codes, ordinances, and regulations.
  • Ability to Work Independently: Ability to work independently and make sound decisions in the field.
  • Ability to Tactfully Explain Guidelines: Ability to tactfully explain guidelines, regulations, policies, enforcement code and ordinances.
  • Ability to Maintain Confidentiality: Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and impartiality.
  • Ability to Perform All Work Duties: Ability to perform all work duties and activities in accordance with County and Department policies, procedures, and safety practices.
  • Ability to Prioritize Projects: Ability to prioritize projects and review and schedule workloads to ensure efficient use of division staff and resources.
  • Ability to Operate Standard Office Equipment: Ability to operate standard office equipment, including a personal computer using program applications appropriate to assigned duties.
  • Ability to Operate a Motor Vehicle: Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
  • Ability to Communicate Effectively: Ability to communicate effectively and establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, the public, developers and builders, customers, applicants, property owners, and other interested and affected parties, including in stressful or adversarial situations.
  • Ability to Demonstrate Integrity: Ability to demonstrate integrity, ingenuity, and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks.
Acceptable Experience and Training
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent: High school diploma or equivalent required; some college coursework in public administration, law enforcement, or a related field preferred.
  • Previous Experience in Code Enforcement: Previous experience in code enforcement, law enforcement, or related field is highly desirable.
  • Any Equivalent Combination of Experience and Training: Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.
Special Qualifications
  • Idaho Driver's License: Idaho driver's license is required.
