Head of Process Engineering

The Head of Process Engineering is a pivotal role responsible for spearheading the onsite engineering team at Chobani's production facility. This position demands a high level of accountability, leadership, and independent decision-making. The incumbent will oversee the design process from initial project conception through to execution and finalization. This role involves evaluating vendor capabilities, reviewing and negotiating project proposals, and ensuring the successful development and implementation of projects, including the performance of process systems. Additionally, this position is crucial for providing timely support for daily manufacturing operations, focusing on troubleshooting, optimization, and waste reduction initiatives. A key responsibility is to uphold food safety and quality standards for Chobani products.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide technical expertise to support processing, utilities, and wastewater systems
- Devise strategies to enhance process efficiencies while reducing costs, improving yields, and ensuring safety
- Diagnose process issues and identify root causes to resolve challenges
- Coordinate process controls with automation systems
- Create conceptual engineering designs and layouts for process equipment
- Develop documentation to support process modifications, including PFDs, P&IDs, and scope descriptions
- Specify required equipment and collaborate with vendors and contractors to achieve project goals
- Lead process risk assessments, automation simulations, and project-related FMEAs
- Oversee the formulation of intervention, LOTO, and flush plans
- Ensure asset tagging in WW Historian and proper functioning of automated reporting systems
- Determine the configuration of piping, equipment, and utilities for engineering modifications
- Collaborate closely with the Project Management team to ensure timely and budget-compliant project delivery
- Conduct research on engineering topics, prepare studies, and execute trials with production
- Assist in transitioning capital projects to the production team
- Maintain a comprehensive documentation library in partnership with the drafting team (including Equipment Layouts, Process Flow Diagrams, P&IDs, Equipment Manuals, Standards, etc.)
- Solicit and evaluate all proposed process changes and designs through a Management of Change process
- Review relevant agency regulations and provide guidance to operations, maintenance, and project managers
- Adhere to Chobani's safety protocols and Good Manufacturing Practices
- Engage in other exciting opportunities as assigned
- Experience in the dairy or food manufacturing sector with extensive process knowledge; experience with cultured dairy products is advantageous
- 3-5 years of experience in a director-level role leading a technical team
- 10-15 years of experience in capital projects or plant manufacturing
- Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline
- Familiarity with HACCP, food safety, and compliance regulations; PMO experience is a plus
- Understanding of PLC and logic controls for high-speed operational equipment
- Proven leadership skills with the ability to work collaboratively, create a shared vision, inspire others, challenge the status quo, and drive change
- Willingness to act as a working manager and provide technical support to the process engineering team as needed
- Demonstrated ability to develop team members and share knowledge effectively
- Strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks under time constraints
- Excellent communication skills to interact effectively with stakeholders at all organizational levels
- Proven experience in strategic planning, project management, and team leadership
- Track record of driving process improvements, cost reductions, and operational efficiencies
