The Head of Process Engineering is a pivotal role responsible for shaping and guiding the onsite engineering team at Chobani's production facility. This position demands a significant level of accountability, leadership, and independent decision-making. The incumbent will manage the design process from initial project conception through to execution and finalization. Key responsibilities include evaluating vendor capabilities, negotiating contract terms, and ensuring successful project development and implementation, with a focus on the performance of process systems. Additionally, this role will ensure the timely support of daily manufacturing operations, including troubleshooting, optimization, and initiatives aimed at waste reduction. A crucial aspect of this position is to uphold food safety and quality standards for Chobani products.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide technical expertise in processing, utilities, and wastewater systems
- Develop strategies to enhance process efficiencies while reducing costs, improving yields, and ensuring safety
- Diagnose process issues and determine root causes to resolve challenges
- Align process control with automation systems
- Create conceptual engineering designs and layouts for process equipment
- Generate documentation supporting process modifications, including PFDs, P&IDs, and project scopes
- Identify necessary equipment and collaborate with vendors and contractors to achieve project goals
- Lead process risk assessments, automation simulations, and related FMEAs
- Oversee the creation of intervention, lockout/tagout, and flushing plans
- Ensure asset tagging in WW Historian and the proper functioning of automated reporting systems
- Design layouts for piping, equipment, and utilities for engineering modifications
- Collaborate closely with the Project Management team to ensure timely and budget-compliant project delivery
- Conduct research on engineering topics, prepare analytical studies, and perform trials with production
- Assist in transitioning capital projects to the production team
- Maintain a comprehensive documentation library in coordination with the drafting team
- Evaluate and provide feedback on proposed process changes through a structured Management of Change process
- Review relevant agency regulations and advise operations and project managers accordingly
- Adhere to Chobani's safety protocols and Good Manufacturing Practices
- Engage in additional responsibilities as assigned
- Experience in the dairy or food manufacturing sector with extensive process knowledge; experience with cultured dairy products is advantageous
- 3-5 years of experience in a director-level role leading a technical team
- 10-15 years of experience in capital projects or plant operations
- Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline
- Familiarity with HACCP, food safety, and compliance regulations; PMO experience is a plus
- Understanding of PLC and logic controls for high-speed operational equipment
- Proven leadership skills with the ability to collaborate, inspire a shared vision, and drive change
- Willingness to act as a hands-on manager and provide technical support to the process engineering team
- Demonstrated ability to mentor team members and share expertise
- Strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks under time constraints
- Excellent communication skills for effective interaction with stakeholders at all organizational levels
- Proven experience in strategic planning, project management, and team leadership
- Track record of implementing process improvements, achieving cost savings, and enhancing operational efficiencies
